Jettygirl Time Machine – July 30, 2007 – Surf Session with Bec Woods, Claire Bevilacqua, Megan Abubo, Kyla Langen, Kassia Meador, and more…

Jettygirl Time Machine - July 30, 2007 - Surf Session with Bec Woods, Kyla Langen, Kim Mayer, Kassia Meador, Rochelle Ballard, Lyndsay Noyes, Violet Kimble, Sarah Beardmore, Megan Abubo, and Claire Bevilacqua Description: We've decided it's time to unlock the video vault and showcase some of the sessions that have gone down in front of our lenses over the years. The video size may be small and standard definition (*glorious 480p, haha) but the spirit of the sessions back then were most definitely high-def, vibrant and in full color. If it hadn't have been for two individuals, Kyla Langen and Kassia Meador, Jettygirl would never have become a reality. At the time, Kyla was living in Carlsbad while Kassia Meador had recently moved to Oceanside. These two homes would become the focal points as some of the best female surfers in the world would stop by and visit during the summers. Each morning I'd wake up to pre-social media text messages and phone calls about how the waves were and where the session was going to happen. It could just be the Oceanside area itself, but I see less and less of these surf sessions where groups of women get together and push the limits at one particular break. All of these surfers were complete individuals but there was enough cohesiveness as a group for people on the beach to feel the energy of women's (shortboard) surfing being pushed forward one ride at a time, even on a junky summer day like the one in this clip. Well, enough chatter on my part. I hope you enjoy the first of many Jettygirl Time Machine surf sessions ...good rides, wipeouts, smiles, and everything else that makes an average day at the beach something special. Throwback Thursday with Julie Cox and an Explosion of Light

Julie Cox surfing at night at First Point Malibu. Surf photo by Chris Grant. Rolling back seven years and as we were driving back down the coast from one of Julie's favorite secret spots, we passed Malibu and saw a few lines breaking on a glassy, moonless night. I had just picked up my first flash housing and unfortunately, my novice skills resulted in a backscatter of lights on all the photos. Mistakes aside, it's Throwback Thursday so here you go. Throwback Thursday with Summer Romero: Few longboarders I’ve ever met…

Summer Romero, 2004 World Longboard Champion, shreds on a shortboard in clean, California conditions. Surf photo by Chris Grant, Jettygirl Online Surf Magazine. (Facebook Post - 2011.11.24) Few longboarders I've ever seen can cross-step to the nose as quickly and smoothly as 2004 World Champion, Summer Romero. And I love to watch her surf. While getting ready for the upcoming ASP event in China, Summer did something unexpected...she pulled out her new shortboard for some shredding. I'm partial to Fall and this shot shows why...sunshine, clean conditions and fun rights at my favorite spot. Everything was perfect except I was standing on the beach while everyone else was in the water 😛 -Chris Grant * See this photo and others on Jettygirl's Facebook Page >> Additional Resources: Throwback Thursday with Alexa Frantz: Her eyes reflect... Throwback Thursday with Alexa Frantz: Her eyes reflect…

Alexa Frantz hits the lip at Scripps, La Jolla, California. Surf photo by Chris Grant, Jettygirl Online Surf Magazine. Her eyes reflect the sadness of the loss of a loved one along with the wisdom of someone who has had to keep walking through a painful stretch of time. Yet her heart beats strong, so strong ...and she's as sweet and as real today as the day I met her years ago. She hasn't been in the water for months but her surfing is as fresh and powerful as ever. Surfing may be written off by some as a frivolous activity but for those of us that call ourselves surfers, regular doses of saltwater are as vital to life as the very air we breathe. Welcome home Alexa. Seeing you throw spray again made my day! * Read comments from the original Jettygirl Facebook post here >>

Throwback Thursday with Dimity Stoyle: Dear Surf Industry…

Dimity Stoyle surfing in California last Fall © Chris Grant / Jettygirl.com Dear Surf Industry, You missed one. The girl on the virtually sticker-less purple board is one of the best surfers I've ever seen. If you don't believe me, believe the legendary Jay Adams who I could hear whistling loudly after the first wave of her session featured a huge hook, a fins-free blast, a clean roundhouse, and a solid frontside air. Next time you're calculating budgets and going over pie charts for your lifestyle surfers, perhaps you can carve out a slice for a surfer who actually blows minds instead of kisses. Sincerely, A fan of Dimity Stoyle * Read comments from the original Jettygirl Facebook post here >>
