Amee Donohoe - Single Wave Thursday. One Ride, No Music, Just Surfing. One of the most underrated surfers I've ever met is Australia's Amee Donohoe. Intelligent, hilarious, and truly one of a kind. This is the last wave I ever saw her surf before she left the tour. A magic, spray-painted, red board under the feet of an uber-talented human being---it doesn't get any better. If I may take a slight diversion today... as you all well know, the Roxy Pro Gold Coast ended a few days ago and announcers, media types, and social media outlets rightfully lit up with praise of the women's performances. While the current crew of World Tour surfers are taking surfing to the next level, my hope is that we never forget those who have come before. Without the benefits of modern equipment, air awareness training, instantaneous video feedback, cameras following their every move, and social media chatter of every type, the surfers of the past pushed the envelope of what was possible then and laid the foundation of what's possible now. The surfers of today, talented as they may be, are not the starting point but simply the next step in the rich fabric of surfing's history. Felicity Palmateer - Single Wave Thursday. One Ride, No Music, Just Surfing. Last summer I was down at the beach for a shoot with some surfers from South America who were here to compete in the Supergirl Pro. I was set up on the right but out of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of Australian surfer, Felicity Palmateer, ripping a left. Having met her the previous summer, I was stoked to see another familiar face in the lineup. After paddling back out, she spun around and caught this fun wave, punctuating it with an explosive hit off the closeout section. Curiously, she proned to the beach after the wave, followed closely behind by Alessa Quizon. How I missed the entire session of two amazing goofyfoots is beyond me, but to be fair, the rights were firing with Silvana Lima and Courtney Conlogue trading frontside snaps on 150-yard walls. A few minutes after Felicity and Alessa had left the beach, I saw Courtney ramble across the rocks and start booking it up the trail. The rest of the afternoon I wondered why they had all bailed at the same time, but social media would later reveal that a Billabong wetsuit shoot was going down with Megan Villa a few miles north of where we were. We certainly would and that's the exact reason why we enjoyed Georgia Fish's clip so much. The scenery, the local smiles, the warm water and absolute playground quality of surf spots Georgia surfs makes us want to book the next trip to Sumbawa. Six years ago this month I had the opportunity to meet one of South Africa's best surfers, Tammy-Lee Smith, to this day one of the best barrel riders I've ever seen. It was so great getting to hear Tammy's stories of life in Africa. Tammy's deep love of her homeland and its people are things I'll never forget about her. On this day in Newport Beach, she scored a bunch of clean semi-closeout barrels. This wave, however, had better shape and when she air dropped into it, I knew it would be a keeper. We had four awesome days before the arrival of Xaver, a hurricane that caused havoc in Britain and roughend up the sea at Camilla Kemp's favorite surf sites on the Portuguese coast. Despite mixed weather conditions and not so perfect waves, we captured good surf and had tons of fun with Camilla's friends and family. Right before hopping a plane to return home to France, I had the opportunity to meet up with Pauline Ado for a quick early morning session. Her clean, powerful style was a fantastic match to the fun, bending rights that were breaking that day. On this particular wave, Pauline displays perfect flow and technique as she drives into four solid turns down the line. Tory Gilkerson - Single Wave Thursday. One Ride, No Music, Just Surfing. This past weekend I sat with Tory Gilkerson for about sixteen hours judging a Scholastic Surf Series surf contest at La Jolla Shores. The small conditions that greeted us on Saturday morning were soon replaced with the increased size and power of the widely publicized swell that was beginning to march into our coastline. By the time the contest tents were being pulled down, we had decided to meet up for a Monday morning surf before she headed into work. While the name spots were overrun with spectacular crowds, we hung closer to home and hit up one of our local spots. Of the few dozen waves Tory caught that morning, this left was one of my favorites. It's difficult to tell through the super wide angle lens of a GoPro, but this wave was absolutely perfect ...ruler edged, light offshore, and not a drop of water out of place. While I didn't have a score sheet handy, I quickly jotted down a 10 in my mind as she continued down the line with another noseride along the inside sandbar. Claire Bevilacqua - Single Wave Thursday. One Ride, No Music, Just Surfing. If there is one surfer who we've covered a bunch over the years, it's Western Australia's Claire Bevilacqua. The clean-eating, earth-loving, barrel-charging regularfoot is gifted with extraordinary amounts of pure energy. While she's still driven to pull into freakishly shallow barrels at home and to loft ever higher airs, Claire has now dedicated herself to training the next generation of Western Australia's competitive surfers through The Claire Bevilacqua Surf Academy. On this particular day during one of her annual trips to California back in 2009, Claire makes sense of a crowded Lowers lineup with a clean right that she punctuates with a couple of layback hacks before driving into a big wrap on the inside. The footage is old "standard def" but Claire's surfing, like her life, is HD all the time. Bevo is one of our favorite human beings and our fingers are crossed that she'll be visiting California again sometime soon. Kaleigh Gilchrist - Single Wave Thursday. One Ride, No Music, Just Surfing. Our paths cross for maybe an hour or so once a year, but it's always a pleasure to meet up with Newport Beach's Kaleigh Gilchrist. Whether she's throwing massive spray into the air or drilling a shot into the goal for the national champion USC Women's Water Polo team, Kaleigh's approach is pure power. On this particular day the lineup was packed full of trick surfing and aerial set-up turns, but when Kaleigh paddled out, her approach was noticed immediately. After her first wave featured a critical layback snap, I heard some dudes on the beach asking "Who's that girl?" and after coming into the beach following her own spectacular five-hour session, Claire Bevilacqua told me, "Your friend with the curly hair is ripping out there!" Shredder, scholar, athlete, and this week's Single Wave Thursday subject, Kaleigh Gilchrist. (My apologies for the crooked horizon. Kaleigh surfs so fast that I couldn't adjust my tripod in time to get things lined up correctly.) Courtney Conlogue – Single Wave Thursday. One Ride, No Music, Just Surfing.

Courtney Conlogue - Single Wave Thursday. One Ride, No Music, Just Surfing. There are only seventeen surfers on the prestigious ASP Women's World Tour and lucky for us, world ranked #4, Courtney Conlogue, lives only an hour up the road from the Jettygirl office. While we don't get up to Orange County all that much, Courtney enjoys surfing some of our local breaks as is the case in the video below. On a morning that was actually a bit onshore and bumpy, Courtney consistently picked out the glassier gems where she proceeded to throw multiple hooks down the line. On this particular wave, as whitewater explodes on the outermost jetty, Courtney rifles off a couple of clean snaps before winding up for a massive fan off the closeout. If you're like us and enjoy taking notes on how to improve your own surfing, one of the most important keys to Courtney's world class top turns is her commitment to the rail on her bottom turns. Leaning around sections will get you down the line but to throw eight feet of spray, it requires the type of leverage that results from deep, powerful arcs off the bottom. Try it next time you paddle out and see the difference a solid bottom turn will make. You may not be headed to the World Tour, but making it rain on your friends is pretty fun too!
