Single Wave Thursday featuring Claire Bevilacqua. One ride, no music, just surfing. Bevo on Jettygirl Online Surf Magazine. Claire Bevilacqua - Single Wave Thursday. One Ride, No Music, Just Surfing. If there is one surfer who we've covered a bunch over the years, it's Western Australia's Claire Bevilacqua. The clean-eating, earth-loving, barrel-charging regularfoot is gifted with extraordinary amounts of pure energy. While she's still driven to pull into freakishly shallow barrels at home and to loft ever higher airs, Claire has now dedicated herself to training the next generation of Western Australia's competitive surfers through The Claire Bevilacqua Surf Academy. On this particular day during one of her annual trips to California back in 2009, Claire makes sense of a crowded Lowers lineup with a clean right that she punctuates with a couple of layback hacks before driving into a big wrap on the inside. The footage is old "standard def" but Claire's surfing, like her life, is HD all the time. Bevo is one of our favorite human beings and our fingers are crossed that she'll be visiting California again sometime soon. Our paths cross for maybe an hour or so once a year, but it's always a pleasure to meet up with Newport Beach's Kaleigh Gilchrist. Whether she's throwing massive spray into the air or drilling a shot into the goal for the national champion USC Women's Water Polo team, Kaleigh's approach is pure power. On this particular day the lineup was packed full of trick surfing and aerial set-up turns, but when Kaleigh paddled out, her approach was noticed immediately. After her first wave featured a critical layback snap, I heard some dudes on the beach asking "Who's that girl?" and after coming into the beach following her own spectacular five-hour session, Claire Bevilacqua told me, "Your friend with the curly hair is ripping out there!" Shredder, scholar, athlete, and this week's Single Wave Thursday subject, Kaleigh Gilchrist. (My apologies for the crooked horizon. Kaleigh surfs so fast that I couldn't adjust my tripod in time to get things lined up correctly.) Single Wave Thursday featuring Courtney Conlogue. One Ride, No Music, Just Surfing. Courtney Conlogue - Single Wave Thursday. One Ride, No Music, Just Surfing. There are only seventeen surfers on the prestigious ASP Women's World Tour and lucky for us, world ranked #4, Courtney Conlogue, lives only an hour up the road from the Jettygirl office. While we don't get up to Orange County all that much, Courtney enjoys surfing some of our local breaks as is the case in the video below. On a morning that was actually a bit onshore and bumpy, Courtney consistently picked out the glassier gems where she proceeded to throw multiple hooks down the line. On this particular wave, as whitewater explodes on the outermost jetty, Courtney rifles off a couple of clean snaps before winding up for a massive fan off the closeout. If you're like us and enjoy taking notes on how to improve your own surfing, one of the most important keys to Courtney's world class top turns is her commitment to the rail on her bottom turns. Leaning around sections will get you down the line but to throw eight feet of spray, it requires the type of leverage that results from deep, powerful arcs off the bottom. Try it next time you paddle out and see the difference a solid bottom turn will make. You may not be headed to the World Tour, but making it rain on your friends is pretty fun too! Thank you for the lessons, Courtney! Our "massive" travel budget sometimes allows us to venture far from our local spots ...in this case, three dollars of gas and a short bike ride got me in front of one of my favorite surfers, Justine Dupont. Justine had been in Oceanside competing in the Supergirl Pro and although we were in contact throughout, we never connected on a shoot until this quick morning session as she and Pauline Ado were heading to the airport for the flight home to France. For those of you who may not know Justine, she's definitely one of the most talented surfers I've ever had the opportunity to meet. Not only can she throw shortboard airs and rotations, she's also a world class longboarder (ranked #3 on the ASP), and she charges truly massive waves as you can see here at Belharra, France and at this gnarly, wedging right at Aileens in Ireland. I can't wait until she returns to California next summer, but in the meantime, here's Justine in our latest Single Wave Thursday. One ride, no music, just surfing. Zeufy Tuesdays, Part One – Zeuf Hesson Shares a Special Message with Loved Ones and the World in “Hope More,” a Short Film by Heather Hudson

Zeufy Tuesdays - Part One of a Four-Part Series. Heather Hudson celebrates the life of Zeuf Hesson in Hope More, a short film. Zeufy Tuesdays: Part One in a Four-Part Series Each Tuesday Celebrating the Life of Zeuf Hesson My Friend Zeuf - by Heather Hudson Our paths crossed over 7 years ago when I was in the process of creating my first surf documentary, "The Women and the Waves." I had asked Ashley Lloyd to be in the film and I had planned to meet her at Linda Benson's Roxy Jam Contest in Cardiff, California. (As a first time filmmaker, I wanted to give Ashley a few of my co-producer's films on DVD, to show her that we were legitmate!) When I finally found Ashley in the crowd, she was running off to surf in her heat. That is when she introduced me to Zeuf, who was with her and watching her bags. We immediately struck up a conversation and eventually exchanged our phone numbers. It was from that moment that our friendship began. And very soon after that I knew that I wanted her in my film. She asked, "Are you sure?" I said, "Yes!" I was very sure. She was my soul surfer & sister! Looking back now, I can't help but cherish my memories of this amazing, beautiful, loving, caring soul that is Zeuf. I knew nothing about her when we met, and learned so much as time passed. She had the biggest most caring heart. She would do anything to help anyone at anytime. She was loved by so many because she made every person feel special. Even though she struggled with cancer through all of those years, she never complained. She managed to LIVE with GRACE. She had a really funny sense of HUMOR and a SPARKLE in her eyes. How fortunate I am to have had her in my LIFE.

HOPE MORE - A Short Film by Heather Hudson Description: About a year ago, I told Zeuf that I wanted to make a short film while we were on our annual surf trip down to Mexico. She paused a moment and said, "Make a film about HOPE." I replied, "Okay, I can do that." Fast forward to June, 2013, "HOPE" was finished. I sent it to her, she loved it and was really stoked. Others seemed to like it too, and I was stoked! As her health declined since then, I kept thinking that I had MORE of her message from the trip. So, here is the second installment: "HOPE MORE." Dedicated to her husband, Frosty Hesson, their family, and to those who loved and were touched by Zeuf. Here's to Zeuf! Surf Photo Friday – Malia Ward, Chris Ward, and a Surf Photographer’s Second Worst Nightmare

Malia Ward drives off the bottom on a sunny California day. Surf photo by Chris Grant, Jettygirl Online Surf Magazine. Surf Photo Friday - Malia Ward, Chris Ward, and a Surf Photographer's Second Worst Nightmare After juggling schedules that never seemed to jive, we finally set up a morning to shoot some photos. A quick call to Malia's mom, Jacqueline, to verify we were on and I was into my car and driving north. Upon exiting the freeway, I was feeling that familiar blend of excitement and anticipation that comes on when working with somebody new. Although usually on time, I felt quite proud of myself for arriving several minutes early. However, the feeling vanished with one glance at the back seat of my parked car. Although there are some bad things that can happen when shooting from the water...being run over, getting pinned against the reef, etc., the biggest nightmare equipment-wise is having a water housing flooded with saltwater. I never give flooding much thought though, because SPL water housings are so well-built. On this day, however, I was guilty of the second biggest nightmare--I had left my housing on the couch at home. What would I do? What could I say? Here I am meeting someone for the first time to shoot water shots and I had left a most important piece of equipment an hour away. As my feelings of preparedness gave way to complete embarrassment, Jacqueline and Malia arrived at the beach lot. Taking a "rip the bandage off quickly" approach, I told them of my blunder right after we had exchanged introductions. Although I was feeling like a complete numskull, they showed me nothing but kindness and understanding and we were soon laughing about the mishap. As luck would have it, the tide was way too high for the break which provided ample time to retrieve the water housing. When we met up later in the day, the tide had dropped, the surf was still glassy and Malia was shredding. It's going to be fun watching Malia's development as a surfer. She is absolutely fearless, surfs for hours on end, and works a crowded break with the ease of a seasoned veteran. As this particular session was winding down, Malia's dad, Chris Ward, paddled out and basically turned every wave into a live surf movie. The nightmarish start to the morning had come full-circle and transformed into a dream day complete with sunny skies, clean waves, and new friends. Surf Photo Friday - Chloe Buckley and the Tiny $500 Wave

Surf Photo Friday – Chloe Buckley & the Tiny Five Hundred Dollar Wave

Surfer girl Chloe Buckley walks across the low tide sand in Oceanside, California. Surf photo by Chris Grant, Jettygirl Online Surf Magazine. Surf Photo Friday - Chloe Buckley & the Tiny Five Hundred Dollar Wave "Chloe, I have a totally random thing to run by you. Mission Fed is having a $500 photo contest where you go somewhere you enjoy in San Diego and have your picture taken while holding their logo. I just printed out and laminated a little sign and was thinking it might be fun to take it into the surf for some water shots." "I'm sooooo down!" As often happens, the moment the ocean caught word of our photo ideas, the surf went flat--dead flat. As the deadline approached, a morning surf check in Oceanside revealed some glassy, almost-rideable ankle slappers. Although we misfired on our first few attempts (pictured below), Chloe and I got in sync for a couple of almost 1-footers and in the end, we scored enough photos that it was actually difficult choosing which image she would submit as her contest entry. A few days later, Mission Fed chose Chloe's photo as the contest-winning entry. She received congratulations from a Mission Fed Senior Vice President, a certificate, and a cool $500 for her tiny, winning wave. Most important to me than winning though was getting the opportunity to shoot with a great friend and an amazing human being. That type of prize is truly priceless. I was edged out in Round Five by one of the French girls. Overall it was a very fun contest and the camaraderie amongst the American girls is great, we all hung together and rooted each other on. I am excited to go explore this tropical paradise and find some new waves! This beachfront hotel is amazing and there's a fun little beach break right in front. Surf Photo Friday - A Special Surf Session with Ashley Lloyd Thompson, Julie Cox, Alex Thompson & Sheri Crummer Several months ago I received a call from my good friend, Julie Cox, that she was heading up to meet Ashley Lloyd for a surf. Caught by surprise that another one of my favorite human beings was in Southern California, I grabbed my camera gear and jumped on the northbound side of the 5 Freeway. Ashley was down here with her husband, Alex, visiting with some members of Alex's family. Legendary personality, Sheri Crummer, also dropped by for some waves and it was an honor to meet her for the first time. Not knowing how the surf was, we were pleasantly surprised to find fun, offshore conditions up and down the beach. It was a blessing to have such a diverse crew of styles ...Julie's timeless elegance, Ashley's switchstance cutbacks, Alex and Chris' classically drawn lines, and Sheri's youthful exuberance were on display for three hours of California wintertime goodness. Kelly Nicely & The Pelican Session - Jettygirl Online Surf Magazine

Surf Photo Friday – Kelly Nicely and the Pelican Session

Pelican feeding frenzy in Oceanside, California. Photo by Chris Grant, Jettygirl Online Surf Magazine. Surf Photo Friday - Kelly Nicely and the Pelican Session When it comes to favorite animals, birds in particular, the choice nearest my heart is the pelican. The awkward bird glides along waves with a grace that's without rival, but when she dives for a meal, she does so with the elegance of a falling sack of potatoes. One morning not long ago while driving up and over the bridge that parallels the San Luis Rey, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw what looked to be a hundred surfers bobbing up and down in the water at South Jetty. As I drove closer I realized just how much I need glasses--there wasn't a single surfer in the lineup, but the break was packed with several hundred pelicans. I didn't have any particular plans to shoot that morning but upon seeing the frenzy in the water, I knew it was time for a swim. The waves were pretty tiny so I called one of my best friends, North Carolina's Kelly Nicely, who I knew owned a beautiful, bright yellow Takayama single fin that would work perfectly in the shin-high peelers. I was curious if the birds would hang out there with us if we paddled out amongst them. Sadly, by the time we got all our gear together, the feeding frenzy had subsided and most of the flock had flown away. Undeterred, Kelly paddled out in front of the remaining pelicans posted up on the jetty and scored a few noserides before we called it a day. I'm not sure if it's the timeless single fin, my favorite birds, or hanging with my good friend, but whatever the reason, this session is one I'll always remember. Surf Photo Friday – Bodyboarding with Hawaii’s Kamalehua Keohokapu

Early morning bodyboard session with Hawaiian Kamalehua Keohokapu. Photo © Chris Grant, Jettygirl Online Surf Magazine It seems wholly appropriate in this strangest of seasons to mix it up a bit. One day the water temp is bikini-worthy and a few hours later a fullsuit and booties are necessary. Similarly, the surf itself has proven to have multiple personalities with swell firing in one spot and nonexistent everywhere else. On the day before this I swam out at this spot and it was warm, firing, and empty ...but not very surfable. Later that day as I was reflecting on the morning session, I remembered that my good friend from Hawaii, Kamalehua Keohokapu, used to bodyboard before she picked up longboarding. A few messages back and forth and we made plans to leave our surfboards at home, grab bodyboards, and hit it early before she headed off to the hospital where she works. Although the swell dropped overnight, we were still greeted with glassy peaks and sunny conditions. Laughs, smiles, and barrels ensued and it was a refreshing reminder to me that whatever surfcraft we happen to be riding, there's no better way to start your day than by being in the ocean. Here are a few photos from the session. Barreling left during bodyboard session with Kamalehua Keohokapu.
