For the third consecutive year the ASP Women's World Longboard Champion will be crowned at the Swatch Girls Pro China hosted by Wanning, with this year's event running from November 20 - 24. Wanning Mayor Zhang Mei Wen is proud to once again showcase the culture, surf and sights that his community has to offer, and is looking forward to again welcoming the world's best longboarders to his hometown for the 2013 Swatch Girls Pro China hosted by Wanning. "The city of Wanning is really proud to again be hosting 2013 SWATCH GIRLS PRO CHINA and the Riyue Bay ASP Men’s World Longboard Championship, namely the fourth Wanning International Surfing Festival, Hainan, China," said Wanning Mayor Zhang Mei Wen. "On behalf of the Wanning People's Government and Wanning's People, I would like to thank the ASP, sponsors and media for supporting for the development of surfing industry in Wanning!" Kelia Moniz (HAW), reigning ASP Women's World Longboard Champion stole the show at last year's Swatch Girls Pro China hosted by Wanning. The young Hawaiian surfed with style and grace, all the way to the podium where she accepted her maiden ASP World Longboard Title. She'll be the one to watch at this year's event, heading to China with a near-perfect record after claiming top spot at last year's Swatch Girls Pro China hosted by Wanning, and runner-up the year before. "It's exciting looking back on last year's win," Moniz said. "It doesn't feel like it's been almost a year! Thinking about China again makes me real fired up to go back and do it all over again! Hopefully this year with a bit more surf. China, or Hainan to be specific is a really special place. The culture there runs so deep and is still so raw and real. It's beautiful for me to see all the people, the fishing villages, the farming, all that gives me a little taste of what Hawaii was probably like once upon a time. It makes me appreciate everything God has blessed me with. It's also great to experience all the love from every volunteer who helps out at the event site. They are the ones who make our experience unforgettable!" Kassia Meador (USA) is world renowned for her free-surfing and style, but these skills also make her a threat in competition as she's always in the mix for the ASP Women's World Longboard Title and will once again be one of the favourites at this year's Swatch Girls Pro China hosted by Wanning. "It's great to have a chance to surf with some of the best female longboarders in the world," Meador said. "I think one of the things I like most about going to China to surf is it's a place I never thought surfing would take me, and every time we go it's a beautiful experience. For women's longboarding the Swatch Girls Pro China is the premier global event. Swatch really goes above and beyond to take care of us, and make sure we have the best surf conditions to compete in. Not to mention it's just super fun to be there with everyone in China. I can wait for this year's event." Chelsea Williams (AUS) has proven to be one of the form surfers over the past two year's at the Swatch Girls Pro China hosted by Wanning, winning the inaugural event in 2011 and finishing runner-up to Moniz last year. Coming close to winning the ASP World Longboard Title on multiple occasions continues to spur Williams on to keep fighting for the sport's highest honour. "Coming so close to winning the ASP World Longboard Title so many times proves that I have what it takes to win," Williams said. "This year I will be putting 110 percent into it. I still feel like an underdog at times which I think motivates me more and throws more fuel on the fire. Swatch really looks after us at this event. It's a professional event and you are made to feel like a top rated athlete while you're there. It's a great contest and one I always look forward to going to. The set up is great and when there are waves there's no better place to be competing and spectating." Darci Liu (CHN) is at the forefront of the growing surf culture on Hainan, taking to the water to surf or teach others as often as possible and has been awarded a wildcard into the Swatch Girls Pro China hosted by Wanning for the third straight year. "In two years I've seen surfing grow tremendously and appreciate what the Wanning Government and Swatch are doing to promote and encourage Chinese to learn more about surfing," said Darci. "I'm really looking forward to having Swatch and the friends I've made at the event return this year to join us all in Wanning for the Swatch Girls Pro China." The 1st STOKEDinc Philippine Wahine Classic Celebrates Filipina Surfer Girls

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The 1st STOKEDinc Philippine Wahine Classic celebrates Filipina Surfer Girls Sabang Beach, Baler, Philippines – October 8, 2013 – The Surf Institute (TSI) successfully organized and launched The 1st STOKEDinc Philippine Wahine Classic, a pioneering tradition in celebration of the Filipina Surfergirl, on a festive Oct. 5-6 weekend at the iconic Aliya Surf Resort in Baler. This girls-only event, a first-of-its-kind in the Philippines and brainchild of The Surf Institute’s founder, Carla Rowland, saw hundreds of surfer girls from the rapidly-growing Filipina surfing community show grace, style, and some ridiculously fun wipeouts in an All-Girls surf competition. A Girls-Only FREE Surf Lessons campaign, ran by Surfing Philippines and GoSurPH!, saw almost a hundred newbie wahines ride the Pacific Ocean swell, in this surf town made famous by the award-winning film Apocalypse Now. The Philippine Wahine Classic is the result of Carla Rowland’s vision to empower Filipina surfers and is the first to unite and highlight Filipina lady sliders of all abilities. Sponsored by the Philippines’ pioneer action sports brand and retailer, STOKEDinc, this inaugural event showcased some of the best female surfers currently in the Philippines, as well as those quickly coming up the ranks. “We were honored to have been asked by Carla Rowland to be part of this event,” says STOKEDinc Managing Director JV Borromeo, “and we’re even more stoked for the lucky ladies who’ll get to win a couple of world class Zamora surfboards, shaped by the California-based Filipino shaper Ian Zamora. Our Stoked Girls will, without a doubt, articulate their love of life, the beach, the seas, and the ocean riding these beautiful surfboards fluently.” Carla Rowland - The 1st STOKEDinc Philippine Wahine Classic Celebrates Filipina Surfer Girls Having spent many years herself in competition, Rowland found it disheartening and eventually put herself on the other side of the judges’ table. “I’ve spent a number of years working behind the scenes in contests, learning what it takes to put on a really good event. This was my opportunity to put all that practice to the test! I think I passed!” Filipinas from all over the country who came to participate in this maiden occasion experienced fun 2 to 5 foot surf with some bigger sets witnessed on Saturday. The ladies battled it out in four-woman heats, in four divisions: Malihini (novice) Shortboard, Malihini (novice) Longboard, Open Longboard, and Open Shortboard. Malihini Shortboard finalist, Kimpot Ritual, expressed in a note to Rowland after the event, “Thank you so much for the happiest weekend ever here in Baler… It was a memorable experience for me and to all the other wahines who participated… Super thank you!” After the awards ceremony, Rowland had a moment to reflect on the weekend. “It was really amazing to see all these women come together to partake in this special event,” she said of her first spearheaded production. “I am just so pleased with the turnout and to see all the happy faces… Well, it just makes me feel like I’ve definitely done something right!” It was no surprise that Filipina powerhouse, Daisy Valdez from La Union, took both open divisions, securing herself not one, but two surfboards handcrafted by Filipino-born, California-raised, Ian Zamora, of Zamora Surfboards. The Malihini shortboard division saw controlled maneuvering from famous travel blogger Lois Yasay (www.wearesolesisters.com), who took the top place in that division, and smooth transitions from Malihini Longboard champion, Melai Karaan of La Union; both of which won their own personal surf training devices from NoHo Surf. Special awards were given to local girl, Zhainaday Tena of Baler, for scoring the best wave of the weekend in her open shortboard round 1 heat where she averaged a 6.5. Jam Choa of Venezuela City received the Wahine of the Weekend award for her positive spirit and Baler local, SweetLyka De La Torre was honored with the Mags Martin Memorial Award for her exemplary display of risk-taking and tenacity. Last, but certainly not least, Mitch Sayoc of Quezon City, a Malihini Longboard finalist, secured the coveted Worst Wipeout award for her near decapitation of her own head in one of her early round heats. Alongside the competition, the weekend was host to Surfing Philippines GoSurPH! initiative where people received free surf lessons from local instructors. Surfing Philippines co-founder, Gerard Sison and GoSurPH! Campaign Director Joncy Sumulong were all smiles welcoming all the participants. “Seeing all the girls totally stoked on catching their first wave gets us totally amped to take our GoSurPH! campaign to many more destinations, and giving many more free surf lessons,” says Gerard Sison, “the spirit of surfing is really for everyone.” Aliya Surf Resort owner Roy Angara, affectionately called The Fresh Prince of Baler, has played a vital role in the Baler community and has been involved in the surf scene there for many years. “This was one of the best competitions we have seen here at Aliya. Everything went so smoothly and all the competitors really enjoyed themselves. We can’t wait to do it again!” RESULTS: Open Longboard 1. Daisy Valdez 2. Daizy Nazol 3. Winnie Fuller 4. Photo ASP/RowlandPictured: Lower Trestles, site of the newest addition to the ASP Women's World Tour Credit: ASP/ROWLAND FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) International ASP International Announces Women’s WCT Event at Trestles for 2014 LOWER TRESTLES, California/USA (Tuesday, September 17, 2013) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) is pleased to announce the addition of San Onofre State Beach – Lower Trestles as a venue to the 2014 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour (WCT) schedule. The event, scheduled to run in conjunction with the men’s Hurley Pro at Trestles, will take place in September 2014 and will bring the elite ASP Top 17 to the famed cobblestone pointbreak of Lower Trestles for the first time in history. “Lower Trestles is one of the most high-performance waves on the planet and we’re absolutely thrilled that the world’s best female surfers will be here in 2014,” Jessi Miley-Dyer, ASP Women’s Tour Manager, said. “The addition of this venue to the women’s schedule is indicative of ASP management’s commitment to enhancing the women’s tour and placing these women in excellent waves. I’m excited to see what the ASP Top 17 do out here in 2014.” Sponsorship for the women’s component of the event is to be determined, but its addition to the tour in 2014 has been significantly supported by the Hurley Pro at Trestles. “It’s been a very productive process working with new management at the ASP as well as California State Parks to get the permits necessary to add the women’s component next season,” Pat O’Connell, Hurley’s VP of Marketing said. “Trestles is a tremendously rippable wave and I think the world’s best female surfers are going to really turn heads out there next year.” Today’s announcement confirms ASP Management’s commitment to enhancing women’s professional surfing as the first of many public announcements to come. “This is an excellent first step,” Paul Speaker, ASP International CEO, said. “I truly believe that the women surfing at the elite level of competition are some of the most inspiring athletes and individuals I have ever come across. Providing them with a stable and quality platform upon which to perform is a crucial part of the ASP’s DNA moving forward. We’re very appreciative of the collaboration with Hurley, IMG and California State Parks on achieving this. This is the first of many exciting things to come.” The Hurley Pro at Trestles is currently running from September 15 – 21, 2013 and is webcast LIVE via www.thehurleypro.com A full 2014 ASP schedule will be released in the coming weeks. The next stop on the 2013 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour (WCT) will be the Roxy Pro France from September 24 – 30, 2014. The Surf Beach and Trestles areas of San Onofre State Beach are world renowned and historical surfing beaches, offering some of the most consistent surf on the west coast.

Notes from the Sand: The 2013 Ford Supergirl Pro Lives Up to Its Name

[ WORDS & PHOTOS BY CHRIS GRANT ] When the final autographs had been signed and the tents were beginning to come down, I sat in my car and wrote the following post on Facebook: "We've been in a bit of a funk lately and would have thought a surf contest would be the last place we'd find refreshment. How wrong we were. Watching hundreds of young girls cautiously approach their favorite pro surfers only to be welcomed with graciousness, smiles and thoughtful words was not only heart-warming, but it was extremely inspirational as well. The ear-to-ear smiles, the sparkling eyes of youth, and the skips down the beach clutching a newly autographed hat or piece of paper would have warmed the heart of even the most grumpy, anti-contest surfer. Hearty congrats to the comp winner, Malia Manuel, and to Supergirl for putting on such an amazing event. From what I saw from my vantage point on the beach, the surfers didn't only showcase the current state of women's high performance surfing, they also inspired an entire generation of girl groms who no doubt are dreaming of riding waves of their own one day soon. Very, very well done!" It's been a week since the Supergirl Pro wrapped up and I wanted to share a couple of observations from one of the most important contests on the women's circuit.
The Kids Like all surf contests, ratings points were at stake, money was up for grabs, and the prized Supergirl cape was going to be awarded to the winner. Indeed, all of those things happened but what I remember most were the kids, the thousands of kids that made this event so special. At the end of each heat they'd be waiting at the water's edge for a photo, an autograph, or a smile from every single one of the Supergirl competitors. What warmed my heart the most was seeing that this was far from a one-way street as the surfers appeared to enjoy the exchanges as much as the kids did themselves. It's difficult to sum up in one photo but the image of Bruna Schmitz below does it for me. 100% pure stoke and respect in every direction. Bruna Schmitz shares a moment with two surf-stoked kids at the 2013 Supergirl Pro in Oceanside, California. Surf photo by Chris Grant, Jettygirl Online Surf Magazine.Pictured: Bruna Schmitz shares a moment with two of the thousands of surf-stoked kids in attendance at the Supergirl Pro.
Bethany Hamilton The debacle that followed the US Open earlier this summer didn't have anything to do with the surfers or surfing as the mayhem was caused by kooks just looking for trouble. Nevertheless, even after the porta-potties were turned right-side-up and the broken glass was swept from the streets, surfing itself received another black eye in the press and elsewhere. We need heroes, not jerks, and when Bethany Hamilton walked onto the sand at Oceanside for the first time, it was living proof of that fact. The energy she brought to the Supergirl Pro was contagious and her surfing was inspirational, if not mind-blowing. My favorite part of the Bethany story at the Supergirl Pro was when beach announcer David Stanfield asked the crowd, "Who's here to watch Bethany Hamilton surf?" Hundreds of cheers and hands were raised up and down the beach and as I glanced out to sea I also saw my good friend, the always classic Bec Woods, raise hers as well---while she was still out in her heat. Unbelievable lines for the Bethany Hamilton signing at the 2013 Supergirl Pro in Oceanside, California. Surf photo by Chris Grant, Jettygirl Online Surf Magazine.Pictured: The incredible line to get Bethany Hamilton's autograph snaked under the pier, up the ramp, back around, and then extended all the way to Pacific Street.
Alessa Quizon I first saw Alessa Quizon surf at the Rob Machado Seaside Pro Jr. back in 2011 and immediately became a fan of her casual yet progressive style of surfing. She reminded me so much of my good friend, Shea Hodges, also a crazy-good Hawaiian goofyfoot, that I immediately contacted Shea after the event to tell her I saw what looked to be her surfing twin doing the same layback snaps and fins-free surfing that she was doing. Fast forward to the Supergirl Pro and Alessa absolutely blew minds from her first heat onward. She didn't hold back at all and her surfing throughout the event was on-edge, risky, and go-for-broke (including the flip pictured below that she was very close to pulling). Her luck ran out in the semifinals but it was clear to me that this particular Supergirl doesn't need a cape to fly. Ultra-progressive surfing courtesy of Hawaii's Alessa Quizon at the 2013 Supergirl Pro in Oceanside, California. Surf photo by Chris Grant, Jettygirl Online Surf Magazine.Pictured: You could feel the entire beach collectively hold its breath as Alessa grabbed, rotated, and pushed women's performance surfing another leap forward.
Nikki Van Dijk As radical as Alessa was, halfway through the event I was convinced that Nikki Van Dijk would be one of the surfers on the winner's podium. While Oceanside Pier delivers punchy peaks much of the year, a big south swell in June created a big deep spot between the inside and outside sections requiring an approach that is typically used in Huntington Beach. After pulling a move or two on the outside, a surfer is forced to either "Huntington Hop", kick out, or weave cutbacks to make it to the inside section. While many surfers were getting stuck in the deep spot, Nikki weaved effortlessly from section to section with absolutely zero loss of speed before throwing some explosive finishing moves in the shorebreak. Nikki fell just short in the quarterfinals but her last wave with only seconds on the clock was one of the highlights of the event to me. The score was a touch less than she needed but the last ditch effort was a show of high performance heat surfing at its best. Surf photo by Chris Grant, Jettygirl Online Surf Magazine.Pictured: Australia's Nikki Van Dijk, a standout all weekend long, consistently finished her waves with a flourish.
Tatiana Weston-Webb She lost out in a stacked heat when she came unglued on a late lip blast but make no mistake, Tatiana Weston-Webb is a surfer to watch closely in the very near future. The World Junior Champion throws big hooks both frontside and backside and had it not been for that fall, quite possibly could have found herself on the podium. She didn't win this year but Tatiana Weston-Webb was one of the strongest competitors at the 2013 Supergirl Pro in Oceanside, California. Surf photo by Chris Grant, Jettygirl Online Surf Magazine.Pictured: Throughout the event, Tatiana Weston-Webb, the current World Junior Champion, threw several solid hooks on the outside sandbar.
The South American Contingent The most enthusiastic crew of surfers at the Supergirl Pro were from South America and it was awesome to see them both on the beach as well as at Marina Zawisza's Latin America-based surf film, "3 Killas y un Kiwi" which premiered at Linksoul on Friday night. Silvana Lima, Dominic Barona, Anali Gomez, Sofia Mulanovich, Ornella Pellizzari, Rosanny Alvarez, Adriana Cano, and Bruna Schmitz all shredded and it was fun to hear loud cheering throughout the event coming from their stretch of beach. I should probably leave well enough alone, but Silvana Lima riding a virtually sponsorless board? Come on brands, if you truly are "surf" companies, why not back a surfer who's one of the best on the planet. Ask any number of people standing on the beach during the Supergirl, in terms of pure progression, Silvana stands atop a very short list of surfers. It's time one of you takes a stand. A surfer standing up on a board plastered with your logos who can barely do a turn doesn't do anything for the authenticity of your brand. Sponsor Silvana and bring some legitimacy back to your image. Trust me, you need it. Silvana Lima displays nice edge work on a set wave at the 2013 Supergirl Pro in Oceanside, California. Pre-Heat Warm-Ups While 3.8 million people have watched Anastasia Ashley's pre-heat warm-up on YouTube, the one I enjoyed the most was Dimity Stoyle, shown here leaping almost as high as she is tall. The explosive Australian is currently ranked 2nd on the ASP Women's World Rankings and looks to be a solid addition to next year's World Championship Tour. Watch Dimity surf here. Malia Manuel: Supergirl Like so many stories that were played out during the Supergirl Pro, Malia Manuel's had a great ending as well. The 3x runner-up surfed virtually flawless heats throughout the event and used her spray-throwing backside snaps to nail down the title this year. Even through the late afternoon glare, you could see her smile a mile away as she walked onto the beach with her arms held high in the air. As the spray settled and the crowds parted, the young Hawaiian was 3,500 points stronger in the ASP Women's World Rankings, $8,000 richer, and most importantly, the newest owner of the beloved, pink Supergirl cape. The moment of victory for Malia Manuel at the 2013 Supergirl Pro in Oceanside, California. Surf photo by Chris Grant, Jettygirl Online Surf Magazine.Pictured: Malia Manuel, 2013 Ford Supergirl Pro Champion. Final Scribbles... While it's impossible to mention everything, I want to thank Supergirl and all their sponsors for bringing this amazing event to Oceanside each year. Nowhere else in North America provides a venue for so many international pros and young shredders to compete on the same playing field. The Supergirl Pro gave a talented, underground, California local like Demi Boelsterli the opportunity to advance through round after round on a world stage and it provided a tiny but formidable Hawaiian 14-year-old by the name of Kahanu Delovio the chance to give people a glimpse into surfing's future. Thank you to all the surfers who put on such amazing performances and a special congratulations to Paige Hareb, the Supergirl Pro runner-up, who ripped her way to yet another deserving Finals appearance. To the general public who came out in droves this year to support the women, you have our hearty appreciation. Along with the surfers, sponsors, lifeguards, police, event organizers, and the City of Oceanside, you made the 2013 Ford Supergirl Pro truly, truly super.

Malia Manuel Wins ASP 6-Star Ford Supergirl Pro

Credit: ASP/SHADLEY OCEANSIDE, California/USA (Sunday, August 4, 2013) – Malia Manuel (HAW), 19, has won the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Ford Supergirl Pro over fellow ASP WCT campaigner Paige Hareb (NZL), 23, in peaky three-to-five foot waves in Oceanside, California.Manuel led the Ford Supergirl Pro throughout the event’s entirety, owning the top scores of each round while progressing to the Final. The Hawaiian’s dominance would continue while securing the major victory, belting a 9.57 and 7.67 for powerful combinations on both her forhand and backhand to earn her first victory of the 2013 this season. “The past couple of days, I really had motivation coming off of a tough result at the US Open,” Manuel said. “I wanted to do well there. It’s good to be in California, it’s like a second home to me. I wanted to get in rhythm and just finally have that push for a good result.” Manuel, current No. 12 on the ASP WCT, had struggled to find consistency at the early season stops this year and hopes today’s major victory represents a turning point in her season. “It felt good to finally have one event where everything came together,” Manuel said. “I’ve had such ups and downs this whole year and I was really confident, but it just never all flowed in one contest. I’m happy it happened here and I’m looking forward to finishing up the year.” Paige Hareb, who finished runner-up at last year’s Ford Supergirl Pro, matched her efforts in Oceanside again this year. The talented Kiwi put in a polished performance throughout the entirety of the event, but was unable to find the scores needed to surpass Manuel in the Final. “This is my best result of the year, so I’m pretty happy, but I wish I just could have performed a little bit better in the Final,” Hareb said. “It just didn’t go my way. It was pretty hard to find the right one and it was one of the hardest heats I’ve had in competition and Malia (Manuel) did well.” Hareb, current No 12 on the Women’s WCT, was another elite competitor looking to potentially requalify for the ASP Top 17 via the Qualifying Series (QS) and her second place finish will help the goofy-footer gain traction towards attaining her goal for next season. “I hadn’t had a good result on the QS yet this year and hopefully this will get me up there,” Hareb said. “Hopefully I’m going to move on to Europe and get some good results there and requalify.” Pauline Ado (FRA), 22, marched through two rounds on the final day of competition besting fellow French surfer Justine Dupont, 21, en route to the final. Despite Ado’s success in the early rounds, she was unable to find a rhythm in her Semifinals clash against Manuel, finishing equal 3rd overall. “I had a really good result in the US Open and getting a 3rd here is good for my QS ranking,” Ado said. “I’m super happy overall, but I wish I surfed better in the Semifinal. Malia (Manuel) was on every wave and I didn’t get anything, but it was a good leg for sure.” Ado, current No. 10 on the ASP WCT, was relieved to earn another Semifinals finish following her Equal 3rd place result at the US Open of Surfing and hopes to carry her momentum in to the European leg of the season. “The two last QS events are in Europe, so I’ll have my family and friends there and a lot of support,” Ado said. “Hopefully I can get a few more good results under my belt and requalify for next year’s WCT.” Alessa Quizon (HAW), 19, who entered the Ford Supergirl Pro ranked No. 4 on the ASP Women’s World Ranking, earned her career-best result in Oceanside with an equal 3rd place finish. The Hawaiian goofy-footer would best fellow Oahu native Coco Ho, 22, in the Quarterfinals, but was unable to surpass Hareb in their Semifinals affair. “I’m really happy that I made it this far,” Quizon said. “This is my first Semifinal in a 6-Star QS and I’ve improved so much from last year. I’ve had a few Quarterfinals results as well and I’m feeling confident going in to the rest of the year.” For Ford Supergirl Pro highlights log on to www.supergirlpro.com For additional ASP information log on to www.aspworldtour.com or www.aspnorthamerica.org FORD SUPERGIRL PRO FINAL RESULT: 1 – Malia Manuel (HAW) 17.24 2 – Paige Hareb (NZL) 3.37 FORD SUPERGIRL PRO SEMIFINALS RESULTS: SF 1: Malia Manuel (HAW) 16.33 def. Top Seeds Advance Among Upsets at ASP 6-Star Ford Supergirl Pro

Credit: ASP/SHADLEY OCEANSIDE, California/USA (Saturday, August 3, 2013) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Ford Supergirl Pro returned to building two-to-four foot (1 metre) waves at Oceanside Pier today, with several ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) surfers dominating their heats despite a shock elimination from current ASP World No. 1 Carissa Moore (HAW), 20. Malia Manuel (HAW), 19, took out two heat wins today with a hard-fought effort despite the day’s tricky conditions while earning the event’s highest scores. The Hawaiian belted a single-wave score of 9.60, finishing with a combined effort of a 17.60 heat total in the final minutes of her Round of 24 campaign. “This morning I came down early and had a practice surf and as the tide was filling in my first heat got really slow,” Manuel said. “I had to wait 15 minutes to get my second score and I just had to trust my instincts. This Round of 24 heat was fun, there were a lot more flurries of waves with lots of peaks and I like a little wind. I got some fun waves.” Manuel, current ASP World No. 12, has lost some close heats throughout her 2013 ASP Women’s WCT season, and hopes a result a the Ford Supergirl Pro will mark a momentum swing for her year. “I just want to get some heat wins and carry it in to the rest of the year,” Manuel said. “This beginning of the year was totally different from my rookie year. I had such a good start and made a few Quarterfinals, so it was a whole different mindset. This year, I had to reevaluate what was going on. I was confident in my boards and my surfing and it was a couple things that I had to twist with heats and I know anything can happen with one result.” Pauline Ado (FRA), 22, fresh off of a 3rd place result at the US Open of Surfing, advanced through two heats today with impressive wave selection, punctuating her Round of 12 berth by defeating Carissa Moore in their Round of 24 affair. “I didn’t surf that well this morning and came second, and I guess I had a harder heat this afternoon,” Ado said. “Carissa (Moore) just won the US Open and Dimity (Stoyle) won the last QS, so it was a pretty tough heat. I only got two fives, but it was enough to win. I was stressing out until the end.” Silvana Lima, past ASP World Title threat, looked at home in the peaky beachbreak conditions, unloading fins-free turns and powerful combinations to solidify her position in the Round of 12. “I’m so confident in these conditions and I have a new board that feels really good,” Lima said. “The waves are fun out there and I’m really happy to get through.” Lima, current No. 14 on the ASP Women’s WCT, has struggled to find a rhythm among the ASP Top 17 this season following a severe knee injury but feels her performances are improving as the year progresses. “This does a lot for my confidence,” Lima said. “When I got injured, I wasn’t able to surf at all for two years. It feels good to just surf now. My knee doesn’t hurt anymore and I feel 100 percent. I’m trying to get some good results on the QS and the WCT to requalify for next year.” Paige Hareb (NZL), 23, last year’s Ford Supergirl Pro runner-up, would contribute to the day’s upsets, defeating defending event champion Sage Erickson (Ventura, CA), 22, in a rematch of last year’s Final while securing a spot in the Round of 12. “Sage (Erickson) has beaten me a few times now and it was good to get one back on her,” Hareb said. “I’m the lone Kiwi, so it was nice to see an Aussie get through the heat with me as well. I feel good out here event though it’s a tricky wave. It seems to change everyday and every tide and I’m just trying to be on to it and have fun out there.” The Ford Supergirl Pro will return tomorrow at 10am local time and crown a champion by day’s end. Opening Day of ASP 6-Star Ford Supergirl Pro Completes Five Rounds of Competition

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America Ford Supergirl Pro ASP 6-Star Women’s Event Oceanside Pier, California, USA August 2-4, 2013 Opening Day of ASP 6-Star Ford Supergirl Pro Completes Five Rounds of Competition Australia's Keeley Andrew, 18, earned the highest scores on opening day of the Ford Supergirl Pro. Photo credit: ASP/SHADLEYPictured: Australia’s Keeley Andrew, 18, earned the highest scores on opening day of the Ford Supergirl Pro. Credit: ASP/SHADLEY HUNTINGTON BEACH, California/USA (Friday, August 2, 2013) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Ford Supergirl Pro chopped the field in half on the opening day of competition, narrowing the draw down from 96 to 48 in peaky one-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at Oceanside Pier. The Ford Supergirl Pro is one of five ASP 6-Star events on the 2013 Women’s ASP Qualifying Series, drawing several of the world’s best surfers in search of crucial points towards their 2014 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) Qualification campaigns. Keeley Andrew (AUS), 18, smashed the day’s high scores during her American debut, earning an 8.83 for a series of backhand turns followed up with a 7.60 on her forehand. The young Australian will face off against ASP WCT standout Malia Manuel (HAW), 19, in the Round of 48 and is looking forward to gaining the priceless experience that comes along with competing against the world’s best surfers. “I paddled out wanting to catch whatever looked like it’d have half-decent potential for scores and I was able to catch that first left,” Andrew said. “It was a good start for the rest of the heat. I just want to get heat experience and surf against the world’s best. What more can you ask for?” Kaleigh Gilchrist (Newport Beach, CA), 21, also started strong in her Round of 60 match up, cracking an 8.00 for one powerful forehand turn while advancing to the Round of 48. Gilchrist, a former standout on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series, is looking to gain traction on the ASP Women’s Qualifying Series and is out to post a standout result at the Ford Supergirl Pro. “It’s so tough out there, I think my backup was a 2.63, so you’ve really just got to get the waves,” Gilchrist said. “That’s what makes these contest hard, sometimes it ends up being the luck of the draw and luckily for me I got that one wave. There aren’t too many women’s events around and I’ve aged out of the Juniors so it’s been awhile since I’ve had the jersey on. I’m really excited for this contest and happy to make that first heat.” Demi Boelsterli (Santa Barbara, CA), 23, displayed impressive endurance on the opening day of the Ford Supergirl Pro, advancing through four heats to solidify her position against the top seeds. The Santa Barbara native is carrying added confidence from today’s success and feels the conditions reminiscent of her hometown training grounds could work in her favor. “I’m tired, but it feels good to start from the bottom and keep pushing,” Boelsterli said. “I feel confident because I’ve spent over an hour out there getting used to this new swell and it’ll be nice tomorrow. I’ve surfed against most of those girls before, so I think these mushy conditions might be an advantage to me because I surf these conditions all of the time.” Top Seeds at the Ford Supergirl Pro including current ASP World No. 1 Carissa Moore (HAW), 20, Pauline Ado (FRA), 22, Coco Ho (HAW), 22, Malia Manuel (HAW), 19, former ASP World Champion Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 29, Silvana Lima (BRA), 28, ASP WCT Rookie Bianca Buitendag (ZAF), 19, ASP World Junior Champion Nikki Van Dijk (AUS), 19, defending event champion Sage Erickson (USA), 22, Laura Enever (AUS), 21, and more will take to the water in the Round of 48 tomorrow.
