HB:
I hear you are into doing some environmentally
friendly surf trips...
KL: Yeah, for sure!
HB:
Can you talk about those that you've done in the
past?
KL: Mostly just trying to
not use gasoline in surf exploration.
HB: That's pretty huge right
now, so what have you done?
KL: So just biking or kayaking
or walking instead of driving or flying. Still
having to drive a little bit but just limiting
that. Kayaking - did a kayaking excursion, kayaked
around Catalina Island with surfboards and camped
along the way. Really fun, good times.
HB: What are some of the
crucial things that you have to have with you
on trips like that? Is there one of those things
that people might not think of that you have to
have?
KL: Hmmm...I'd say just food and fire are the
most crucial. After that it's just all kinda frivolous.
HB: Any secret spots out
there?
KL: We didn't see any. Saw
some dumpy beachbreaks.
HB: Either that or you're
keeping them secret?
KL: We'll see.
HB: Any trips planned?
KL: Heading to Nicaragua
in a few hours actually with team O'neill for
Fuel TV and Transworld Surf hopefully.
HB: But you won't be kayaking
or biking there as much.
KL: Well, I don't know.
We'll see. I kinda doubt it. Just take it as it
comes. Just kind of going with the flow with this
trip. But hoping to do some more backpacking surf
trips. Done a couple of those backpacking into
spots and just camping and surfing.
HB: Yeah, where's the next
destination, do you have one figured out?
KL: I wanna do Vancouver,
go up to Canada, and backpack around there. I
hear there's some neat spots. Just cause it's
kinda closer.
HB: Bring your bear repellant...
KL: Yeah, sketchy huh? Shoots!
HB: They have those things,
pepper spray for bears. I've seen it. Look into
it.
KL: But another trip that
I really wanna do, hoping to do this fall is just
kayaking down the California coast or biking or
walking some way besides driving because I drive
that so much from like San Francisco to San Diego,
driving so much, it would be cool to explore it
from the ocean like walking along the ocean as
much as you could or kayaking...
HB: Yeah, you're gnarly!
Right, this morning you left (from Santa Cruz)
at 7am, drove down to LA, you're on your way to
San Diego, to turn around and drive back to LAX
for a 2am flight tonight where you'll fly all
night... like, I get tired! I mean, I don't know,
what's your secret? How do you not get so run
down doing that all the time?
KL: Just sleep hard! Just
pass out and wake up and there's so much to do,
it's all so exciting that that gives me the energy
I guess.
HB: Passion huh?
KL: I guess.
HB: That's rad, very admirable.
KL: Thank you.
HB: With companies like
Patagonia and Sector 9 making organic cotton t-shirts,
what are you going to do to convince O'neill to
do the same?
KL: Serious. I need to start
pushing for that more. Why not?
HB: In the new Surfer Magazine
there's an article about that, I don't know if
you've seen it. I think you should talk to O'neill
about it. We should all do our part to convince
our sponsors.
