HB:
I hear you've been trying some airs lately. Any
successes?
KL: Successes on little
ones, here and there, getting the tail out a little
bit. I haven't stuck many big satisfying ones
yet, but they're really fun to try.
Kyla
talks about launching airs
HB:
For all the rest of us that are trying to think
about doing airs, do you have any tips on what
we should be looking for?
KL: Just stay standing!
Just don't think you can't pull it. I just, lotta
times, I've kinda had some knee problems so I
think I just can't handle landing from that height
on my legs, but just do it. You can.
HB: So when you're going
down the line what kind of wave are you looking
for? What section should you hit, what are you
thinking?
KL: You're thinking, "Up
Up and Away!" You're thinking speed. Getting
as much speed as I can. I have a tendency to launch
too horizontal, like get air horizontal so lately
I'm just trying to think, "up", like
getting above the lip and still going down the
line.... It's tricky, but practice makes perfect.
HB: Hopefully we'll see
that by the end of this month.
KL: Yup, sounds good.
HB: Alright, fantasy sponsor
- like any company in the entire world, not surf
industry. Not that you are a Pepsi fan but just
as an example, Pepsi, you know, Bubblegum...
KL: Bubblegum!
HB: Something you could
have for free for a good long time.
KL: Probably like....oooo,
that's a hard one....like Ticketmaster. See like,
anyone in concert for free.
HB: That's solid! I like
that. And who would be the first person you'd
ask for?
KL: Radiohead. They are
coming to San Diego on the 27th, but I think it's
already sold out.
HB: You'll have to call
the radio station and say, "I'm Kyla Langen,
hook it up!"
KL: Seriously! Sponsor me!
HB: You like music obviously,
other than Radiohead what's gotten you fired up
lately?
KL. Lately, The New Pornographers,
and Shins, MIA, Out Hud, Interpol, The Go! Team,
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Bjork always.
HB: Where do you find out
about most of the new music that you get into?
KL: My brother, he's really
into music. He's a music teacher too. He gets
magazines and looks online and finds the good
stuff and burns me CDs and I'm sorted. I'm lucky
like that.
HB: You get to play in the
band with the whole family. What's that all about?
KL: Yup, that's fun. For
sure.
HB: What do you play?
KL: Mostly I sing. I'll
play guitar here and there. Tiny bit of drums
here and there, late night when the crowd's dwindled
down and we're just messing around. But yeah,
mostly just singing. The Langen Brothers Band,
that's the name of my Dad's band. And so, it's
him and all his brothers, so I sing a couple songs
with them here and there.
HB: That's awesome.
KL: It’s really fun.
HB: When are we gonna hear
Kyla on the radio? Are you the next Jack Johnson,
Donovan, like, Kyla Langen, what?
KL: That would be perfect!
I would love that. Um, it definitely will take
a commitment from me that I'm not willing to give
it right now just cause I wanna qualify, and so
I could spend all day trying to write music and
doing that, but for now I'm gonna spend it surfing
and still focusing on that.
HB: But maybe down the line...
KL: Oh absolutely. Ideally
qualify this year, do the CT for a couple years,
and then, yeah just start trying to do music.
Fuse music and surfing somehow, kinda like Jack
Johnson did I guess.
HB: Sweet! Definitely possibilities
there, those guys have done it.
KL: Yeah, totally.
