KL:
So, your name is pretty synonymous with Malibu,
how was growing up surfing there?
KM: Well, I grew up more in the valley, but Malibu
is where I kinda etched my way into surfing. So
yeah, it's been really rad, I think my style and
who I am as a surfer is definitely because I got
to surf a perfect right point break, which was
awesome, I couldn't have asked for anything more.
Only problem is when it's flat, it's flat. But
yeah, being a valley girl was a little harder,
being 30-45 minutes from the beach. But I think
it maybe made me appreciate the ocean more than
people who wake up by it everyday. For me, once
I'd finally get to the beach I'd stay out for
like a hundred hours.
KL:
Do you see many celebrities surfing out there?
KM: Um, I see a lot of celebrities actually, yeah.
The other day that Kevin Bacon guy was out. And
like, all the Incubus guys surf all the time at
first point. My first job was at this little boutique
in Malibu, and I'd see all kind of famous people.
Pamela Anderson would come in all the time. It's
funny though, cause you feel like you know them,
so you want to say something, but you don't. It's
kinda awkward actually. And they just make the
lineup more crowded, so whatever.
KL:
Do your parents surf?
KM: Yeah, my dad surfs. He's surfed his whole
life, it's pretty cool, I always wanted to growing
up, and I kinda started late, but I'm stoked,
if he didn't surf I maybe wouldn't have started.
KM:
You two surf together?
KL: Yeah, well definitely at the start. I told
him when I was like 15 or so that I wanted to
try and surf, so I did Jr. Guards and then after
that I started going surfing with him and his
friends all the time. So yeah, he was stoked when
I started getting into it.
KL:
You have brothers and sisters?
KM: Yeah, I have a brother, he's 15, and my sister
is 21. It's cool, I have a good family, they're
funny people. I'm lucky for that.
KL:
What's your music flavor?
KM: Oh man, I'm into a lot of stuff. Right now
I'm really into The Killers, and Death
Cab For Cutie and stuff. I get into phases
you know, for a while I was really into dance
music, but now I'm into more mellow stuff. I don't
really want to call it emo, but yeah, more like
indie stuff.
KL:
If you could see anyone in concert, who would
it be?
KM: I think it would be really cool to see Led
Zeppelin, because they were one of the greatest
bands of all time.
