Roxy
Jam Cardiff Begins Friday, September 19, 2008CARDIFF,
California (Tuesday, September 16, 2008) - The 3rd annual
Roxy Jam Cardiff featuring the Linda Benson Women’s
World Longboard Pro presented by Schick Quattro for
Women will be held September 19-21 at Cardiff Reef in
Cardiff, California. The Association of Surfing Professionals
(ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star event marks
the biggest event for professional women’s longboarders
in North America, with the winner of the event claiming
the ASP North America Women’s Longboarding Title.
Jen Smith (Pacific Beach, CA), 22, the 2007 ASP Women’s
World Longboarding Champion, won the event last year
and will be back to defend her title against the field
of international longboarding talent in this year’s
event. The San Diego based longboarder hopes the conditions
on offer this year will mirror last year’s excellent
conditions.
“It’s the biggest longboarding event we
have in California and all of the international competitors
come here for the event,” Smith said. “
If we have waves like we did last year it’s going
to be an amazing contest. The level of women’s
longboarding has really increased and the younger girls
are surfing really well.”
Smith’s victory at the Roxy Jam Cardiff capped
off an amazing season for the young talent. Claiming
a victory at the ASP WQS 6-Star event alongside the
ASP North America Women’s Longboarding Title was
a confidence booster for the young surfer’s career
and she hopes to have a repeat performance this year.
“Winning last year was a huge confidence booster
for my career,” Smith said. “It would be
great to win again this year.”
Lindsay Steinriede (Dana Point, CA), 23, finished 2nd
behind Smith in last year’s event and won the
Roxy Jam Cardiff in 2006. Steinriede will be out to
claim a second event title against the stacked field
of international surfing talent at this year’s
contest.
“I won the event in 2006 and I got second last
year,” Steinriede said. “I’m hoping
to improve on last year’s result and win this
year. I think I’m ready, but it’s going
to be tough.”
Kassia Meador (Oceanside, CA), 26, is another standout
longboarder to emerge from Southern California. Meador
finished 5th in last year’s event and is looking
forward to competing in the uniquely tailored women’s
longboarding contest this year.
“It is great to have such a big event here in
California,” Meador said. “The waves are
so good for longboarding at Cardiff and so many girls
ride longboards here in California. It is good to have
an event close to home that everyone can participate
in and show their stuff.”
Meador has been longboarding competitively for over
a decade now and been a contributor to the progression
of the sport. Meador feels that events like the upcoming
Roxy Jam Cardiff have allowed longboarders to progress
on a competitive level.
“Women’s lonbgoarding has changed a great
deal,” Meador said. “In the past three years
the ASP and Roxy got involved with Linda Benson and
have really changed the face of Women’s competitive
longboarding. We now have a world championship and a
few other events with money in them. It has helped push
the sport in the past few years and I hope one day we
will have a legitimate tour like the shortboarders.”
The Roxy Jam Cardiff will begin on Friday, September
19, 2008 at Cardiff Reef in Cardiff, California at 7am
local time.
