Cory Arrambide and Christa Alves are victorious
at the Billabong Sebastian Inlet Pro Junior
SEBASTIAN INLET, Florida (Monday, Mar.
10, 2008) - Conditions improved for the final day of the Billabong
Sebastian Inlet Pro Junior as Cory Arrambide (Ventura, CA)
and Christa Alves (Cocoa Beach, FL) were crowned men’s
and women’s champions respectively in improved two-to-three
foot (1 metre) wind swell, wrapping the opening event of the
2008 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) North America
Pro Junior Series.
Extending competition an extra day to
accommodate the swell, the Billabong Sebastian Inlet Pro Junior
resumed today with Round 4 and the surfers reveled in the
improved conditions. The short interval swell on hand provided
each heat with consistent surf giving every competitor a chance
to display their surfing talents.
Arrambide was undoubtedly the standout
surfer of the day, dominating the final over Evan Thompson
(Jacksonville Beach, FL) and brothers Eric and Evan Geiselman
(New Smyrna Beach, FL). Arrambide’s superior surfing
in the men’s final forced his opponents in a combination
situation by posting the highest total heat score of the event
with an impressive 17.50 out of a possible 20 points. This
prodigious goofy-footer placed a solid backhand attack on
the rights at Sebastian Inlet, stamping an impression on the
competition as the man to beat as the year continues.
“Arrambide peaked at the right
time. He was clearly the best surfer in the event today as
he put it together with a deserving win.” Mike Parsons,
Billabong Sebastian Inlet Pro Junior Event Director, said.
The victory for Arrambide puts him in
first place overall on the 2008 ASP North America Pro Junior
series, as he earns 500 points towards his qualification for
the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships.
Evan Geiselman, (New Symrna Beach, Fl)
and older brother Eric Geiselman (New Symrna Beach, Fl) also
had good showings with younger brother Evan finished second
with Eric finishing closely behind in third.
In the ASP Grade-1 Women’s Pro
Junior, Floridian Alves posted one of her best finishes to
date, defeating a stacked final in Courtney Conlogue (Santa
Ana, CA), Sage Erickson (Ojai, CA) and Haley Watson (Jacksonville
Beach, FL).
This victory crowns Alves as the 2008
ASP North America Pro Junior Champion and ensures her a spot
at the prestigious Billabong ASP World Junior Championships
in Australia next January.
Joining Alves at the Billabong ASP World
Junior Championships will be Conlogue, who had a solid showing
this past season.
While the girls have been decided, the
men have just begun with the next stop on the 2008 ASP North
America Pro Junior Series being the ASP Grade-2 Ezekiel Pro
Junior at Huntington Beach, CA from Mar. 26-30, 2008.
