RACE FOR THE 2007 ASP WOMEN’S WORLD
TITLE HEADS TO PERU
COOLANGATTA, Australia (Thursday, Oct.
25, 2007) –The top female surfers in the world are preparing
to do battle as the 2007 ASP Women’s World Tour heads
south to the warm-water lefthanders at the Mancora Peru Classic
from Oct. 30 – Nov. 4, 2007.
The inagural event at the venue, the
Mancora Peru Classic will play a crucial role in two important
races as the ASP Top 17 vie for the 2007 ASP Women’s
World Title as well as their qualification spots for 2008.
Silvana Lima (BRA), current No. 2 on
the ASP Women’s World Tour, has made the finals in the
past three elite-tour events, but has yet to capture a victory
in ’07.
“I have been making good results,
but I really want to win an event,” Lima said. “The
waves in Peru are similar to Brazil so I hope to keep the
momentum up and hopefully win.”
Lima is currently separated from ratings
frontrunnter, rookie senstation Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), by
a scant 82 points and with fomer ASP Women’s World Champ
Sofia Mulanovich (PER) and wily veteran Samantha Cornish (AUS)
all within striking distance, the Mancora Peru Classic will
be vital to this season’s title race.
“All the girls are surfing really
well,” Lima said. “There are many girls at the
top and all of them can surf well in lefts. I think Sofia
will have an advantage as she surfs out there a lot, but Steph
and Sam can surf really well too. Hopefully this can be another
good result for me.”
With only three events remaining in the
2007 ASP Women’s World Tour season, the Mancora Peru
Classic will also offer important points to surfers sitting
at the bottom on the ratings who hope to crack the Top 10
cutoff to qualify for the 2008 season.
The 2007 Mancora Peru Classic will be
webcast LIVE beginning on Oct. 30 via www.aspworldtour.com.
