In June 2007 I met Lauren Sweeney for the first time. For our initial photo session, we agreed upon an out-of-the-way beachbreak that was located far from the crowds. After some conversation on the beach, Lauren suited up and paddled out for a short session. As soon as she stroked out to the lineup a nicely shaped left rolled through. Lauren spun around for a late takeoff, flew across the steep wall and launched a solid backside air. On her second ride, a right, she vaulted into an almost-completed frontside air-360. I remember thinking to myself..."how in the world can someone this good be flying largely under the radar?" I knew about Lauren Sweeney of course ...it's just that I didn't know how good of a surfer she was.

Lauren and I have shot a few times since then...with two common threads, one being her ripping, the other thread being an untimely batch of bad weather and onshore winds every time we're together. While a lot of surfers balk at surfing in subpar photo conditions, Lauren always charges out and makes the best of it. I hope she knows how refreshing it is to meet someone with such a great attitude...and to top it off, the girl flat-out rips! --Chris Grant
