JettyGirl: A one million
dollar check arrives in your mailbox with a
note that reads, "Half of this amount is
yours and the other half is to benefit the world
around you." How would you spend the money?
Tammy-Lee Smith:
Well, a million dollars makes a lot of Rands.
I would buy a house or plot of land in my hometown
where I was born, Salt Rock (Ballito) where
my whole family lives. I think a large portion
of the money would be spent on traveling with
my family around the world. Save the rest. The
other half of the money I'd use by helping charities
such as Project O. Maybe try to form my own
charity as cool as Project O. Also, I'd make
sure that Thalente Biyela, a very good friend
of mine who is a 15 year old phenomenal skater
and street kid lives out his dreams of becoming
pro and getting off the streets.
JG: Describe the best surfboard
you've ever ridden and why it was special to
you.
Tammy-Lee: Um,
I'm not so sure. Probably the alaias I have
ridden recently. They were challenging and fun.
But really this double winger fish that G-force
made me (Jordy Smith's dad) and what made it
really special he had tagged my name the whole
way across my board and it made me feel cool.
JG: If you could travel
back to any time in history and hang with one
person while they go about their daily activities,
who would it be and why?
Tammy-Lee: Anytime
during Mandela's life as he is a South African
icon. He put us on the map and has done wonders
for our country.
JG: For thirty days you're
stuck on a desert island with one book, one
song, one surf movie and one snack food. Which
ones would you choose?
Tammy-Lee: Dove
(a story of a young boy who sailed the world).
Wrestlers by Hot Chip. Modern Collective
because I haven't seen it yet.
Almonds .
JG: What is your best surf-related
memory of 2009?
Tammy-Lee: Cruising
around Bali with my best friend Daniel. The
Mr. Price being in Ballito. A good sunset in
California. A summer day at Salt Rock beach
break.
