JettyGirl: A one million
dollar check arrives in your mailbox with a
note that reads, "Half of this amount is
yours and the other half is to benefit the world
around you." How would you spend the money?
Sunshine Makarow:
I'm a bit torn ...I could buy the world a Coke,
or I could divide the money up among a number
of non-profits I support. I think the
Helen Woodward Animal Center does amazing things
for animals and humans; the Green Initiative
Volunteer Effort is a non-profit set up by my
MBA classmates dedicated to providing technology
to students in the developing world; and I've
always been a fan of the Ocean Conservancy.
I'd also like to provide the seed money for
my mom to set up her own non-profit to
help children in the central coast area.
JG: Describe the best surfboard
you've ever ridden and why it was special to
you.
Sunshine: The board
I'm on right now—a Bobby Shadley shape—has
been amazing. It's basically a thruster,
just a bit shorter and wider than what I usually
ride. The board gets amazing speed and
turns on a dime.
JG: If you could travel
back to any time in history and hang with one
person while they go about their daily activities,
who would it be and why?
Sunshine: 1940s,
Eva Duarte de Peron. The story of Evita
fascinates me.
JG: For thirty days you're
stuck on a desert island with one book, one
song, one surf movie and one snack food. Which
ones would you choose?
Sunshine: Catch
22, Seasons of Love, Momentum
II, Banana Bread.
JG: What is your best surf-related
memory of 2009?
Sunshine: So many
great ones ...Oceanside has been firing all
Fall and Winter. I guess having too many
is not a bad thing! I had a great session
with that Boardfolio guy on New Year's Eve.
He was catching 200 yard beach break lefts and
I managed to find one where I cranked one of
the best off the tops of my life.
