JettyGirl: A one million
dollar check arrives in your mailbox with a
note that reads, "Half of this amount is
yours and the other half is to benefit the world
around you." How would you spend the money?
Shea Hodges: If
I was to receive a million dollar check with
a beautiful little note on it like that I would
donate 250 grand to the country of Haiti to
help with the earthquake devastation. The other
250k I would try to educate our keiki (children)
about growing and raising their own herbs, fruits,
veggies and livestock. Also, showing them how
to be sustainable and live with renewable energy.
I would want to help us humans realize what
we are doing to our planet and try to clean
it up.
JG: Describe the best surfboard
you've ever ridden and why it was special to
you.
Shea: My best and
most favorite board ever besides the one I'm
riding at the moment shaped by Kim Purington
was a 5'7" Gerry Lopez thruster. It had
beige and orange tiger strips on the deck and
bottom. She was a dream for sure and handled
Bowls from 1ft and horrible to 5ft and barreling.
JG: If you could travel
back to any time in history and hang with one
person while they go about their daily activities,
who would it be and why?
Shea: If I could
go back in time and hang with anyone in the
world it would be my dad because you don't appreciate
people or the things you have due to life's
craziness until they are gone.
JG: For thirty days you're
stuck on a desert island with one book, one
song, one surf movie and one snack food. Which
ones would you choose?
Shea: Well, for
my one book I'd have to bring some sort of flora
fauna guide so I can somewhat have a clue about
what type of greens I'm surrounded by. One song
would Beach in Hawaii by Ziggy Marley
because that song hits Da spot. One surf movie
...pointless unless there's a TV but thanks
to Clay Marzo and Quik his DVD case is recycled
cardboard and there are wildflower seeds in
there too so I could have some cardboard for
my fire and some wildflowers that I could plant
and hippie out on. For my snack I'd have to
bring carob chocolate nuggets because they're
delicious and give you energy.
JG: What is your best surf-related
memory of 2009?
Shea: I believe
teaching over 200 humans how to surf this summer
at the Hilton Hawaiian Village takes the gold
or my friend spearing an 8-ft tiger shark in
its dome due to it trying to eat his kayak at
Magic Island while we surfed across the channel
at Bowls.
