JettyGirl: A one million
dollar check arrives in your mailbox with a
note that reads, "Half of this amount is
yours and the other half is to benefit the world
around you." How would you spend the money?
Rebecca Woods:
I would be a little scared of any amount of
money for free in this world but ...I would
probably get myself set up in the environment
I want in the neighborhood I want so I never
have to think about rent again!!! 100K would
go direct to SurfAid International because the
work they do is amazing and too often surf spots
are exploited without anything going back to
the local community!
With the rest of the money, I would put
the funding into a massive festival in Sydney
or the central coast (at the beach) to
raise the awareness of women's surfing. Have
live music including all the surfer girls who
play, good aussie underground music, dance lessons,
surf lessons and a bar (you gotta have a bar
in Australia), art and photography. From 4-9
in the summer time so it becomes a celebration
of the sport we love so much. All proceeds raised
would be divided between SurfAid and surfing
for the disabled.
JG: Describe the best surfboard
you've ever ridden and why it was special to
you.
Bec: My learner
board, because it had full and colorful deck
grip, no other reason.
JG: If you could travel
back to any time in history and hang with one
person while they go about their daily activities,
who would it be and why?
Bec: Einstein for
sure. I don't think a reason is needed!
JG: For thirty days you're
stuck on a desert island with one book, one
song, one surf movie and one snack food. Which
ones would you choose?
Bec: A learn Spanish
book, because I could read it over and over
again and still not remember anything. Silence
by Sarah Mclachlan to break the silence. At
the moment the surf movie would be The Present
and for a snack food, a never ending pack of
Tim Tams (it's an ad, seppo's won't get it).
JG: What is your best surf-related
memory of 2009?
Bec: Having Sofia
paddle way deeper than me at a surf break in
Indo called Roxy's (poor choice of name if you
ask me) telling me I was too wide then watching
a set roll through and watch her scramble back
to where I was ...she then surfed the wave for
30 minutes before realizing it was Roxy's not
Rag's Right and this was only because we told
her...
