JettyGirl: A one million
dollar check arrives in your mailbox with a
note that reads, "Half of this amount is
yours and the other half is to benefit the world
around you." How would you spend the money?
Maureen Drummy-Haggar:
If I received a million dollar check, I would
donate the money to local animal shelters and
dog rescues. Our family is passionate about
saving the lives of animals and trying to find
homes for them.
JG: Describe the best surfboard
you've ever ridden and why it was special to
you.
Maureen: The best
surfboard I've ever ridden is my 9'4" single
fin Auntie Mo Model Hobie shaped by Terry Martin.
It's a magic board that we worked to develop
over a four year period of time. It's special
because it's the type of board that works in
6" to 6' surf flawlessly. Thank you to
Terry for being such an incredible shaper!!!!
JG: If you could travel
back to any time in history and hang with one
person while they go about their daily activities,
who would it be and why?
Maureen: If I could
travel back in time it would be to the early
1960s to spend a day with my mom, Mary Lou Drummy,
when she was the same age as I am now. I would
love to go for a surf with her and talk to her
about her views on life and what she thinks
the future might have in store for her. I suppose
the reason I'd like to do this is because I've
lived my entire life having people tell me what
my mom was like "back in the day",
and I'd just like to experience it for myself.
She and I have lived parallel lives in many
ways by traveling the world and surfing professionally.
People are always saying how similar we are,
and it would be incredible to see it firsthand.
JG: For thirty days you're
stuck on a desert island with one book, one
song, one surf movie and one snack food. Which
ones would you choose?
Maureen: Thirty
Days on an island—the book I'd bring would
be Still Life with Woodpecker by Tom
Robbins, the song would be Smile by
Lily Allen, the surf movie would be Thread,
and the snack food would be Trader Joe's Peanut
Butter Pretzels (Yummy!).
JG: What is your best surf-related
memory of 2009?
Maureen: My most
memorable surf experience of 2009 was right
after Hurricane Jimena hit down in Southern
Baja. My husband, my 18 month old daughter,
and I found a remote beach break without a soul
in sight. The air temp was 85. The water temp
was 80. There wasn't a breath of wind. The waves
were peaky from 4-6 feet. My husband and I traded
off watching our daughter on the beach so we
could both enjoy our good fortune. The most
unforgettable moment was when I finally came
in from my last session and my daughter ran
up to greet me and hugged my leg saying, "Mama".
The perfect end to a perfect session.
