JettyGirl: A one million
dollar check arrives in your mailbox with a
note that reads, "Half of this amount is
yours and the other half is to benefit the world
around you." How would you spend the money?
Marissa Shaw: My
half: Help bail out my family and use some for
college. Other half: Start some kind of scholastic
foundation to help young aspiring athletes in
the world reach their educational and athletic
goals.
JG: Describe the best surfboard
you've ever ridden and why it was special to
you.
Marissa: My 5'8"
Roberts thumb tail. Pulled my first backside
360 on that thing. There is so much about this
board that is different from my "usual"
surfboard. I was really stepping out of my comfort
zone when I was ordering this one. I'm glad
it ended up working out!
JG: If you could travel
back to any time in history and hang with one
person while they go about their daily activities,
who would it be and why?
Marissa: That would
definitely have to be Jesus Christ because His
life was so eventful. It would have been so
cool to witness His life and testimonies firsthand.
JG: For thirty days you're
stuck on a desert island with one book, one
song, one surf movie and one snack food. Which
ones would you choose?
Marissa: Hmm...
I'm not much of a reader. I guess the Bible.
Maybe that would force me to read it. Whatcha
Say by Jason Derulo. Young Guns 3.
Chocolate covered peanuts.
JG: What is your best surf-related
memory of 2009?
Marissa: Besides
all of the AMAZING surf and warm water we had
at Lowers this summer, I would have to say that
the SIMA Surfing America Championships in Huntington
was very special. Even though I didn't do as
well as I was hoping, it was the first event
that I had ever seen so much companionship between
some of us girls at a surf contest. There was
so much genuine support being passed around
even though we were all trying to do well ourselves.
It was very special.
