JettyGirl: A one million
dollar check arrives in your mailbox with a
note that reads, "Half of this amount is
yours and the other half is to benefit the world
around you." How would you spend the money?
Kristy Murphy:
I would take half of that million and use part
to invest in my new business Kristy Murphy's
Siren Surf Adventures. Then, I would send my
parents on a killer vacation to wherever they
wanted to go with spending money for Dad to
golf and shopping for Mom. I would take what's
leftover and use it as a down payment for a
sick little beach cottage near a favorite surf
spot!
With
the other half of the million, I would want
it to be used to fund programs that would give
disabled and underprivileged children the opportunity
to discover the ocean. I would like to give
them the chance to experience all the things
that I was fortunate enough to grow up experiencing.
Snorkeling, fishing, and surfing would be a
few fun ways to discover and teach these kids
all about the amazing out of this world creatures
that live below the surface of the waves.
JG: Describe the best surfboard
you've ever ridden and why it was special to
you.
Kristy: I have
two boards that are near and dear to my heart.
First, my very first surfboard, which was a
Donald Takayama Beach Break that I bought used
from the shop in Oceanside, during my first
real surf trip to California. That board and
I had many adventures! I learned all the basics
on it. First I learned to surf down the line,
then a cross step, and finally my very first
cheater 5!
My
other very special board is the board I currently
ride about 90% of my time surfing. It is my
Fantasea model with Siren Surfboards that the
amazing Kevin Shaughnessy made for me! He makes
such beautiful boards. Plus, it is so awesome
to be able to have a board made specifically
for what suits your style of surfing and the
types of waves you choose to surf.
JG: If you could travel
back to any time in history and hang with one
person while they go about their daily activities,
who would it be and why?
Kristy: I would
want to hang with Black Beard or some other
crazy pirate. You know, cruising the Caribbean
plundering and getting into bar fights over
emeralds, gold and pieces of eight. Drink some
rum, or did they have mojitos back then? Also,
I have always wanted to slide down the sail
via a knife in one hand and a sword in the other!
JG: For thirty days you're
stuck on a desert island with one book, one
song, one surf movie and one snack food. Which
ones would you choose?
Kristy: The
Red Tent by Anita Diamant. That book had
a profound affect on me... Drink from the cup
of Jacob! Wondering Stranger, Lionel
Richie. Many Classic Moments. The Spinach
Quinoa Salad from Seaside Market.
JG: What is your best surf-related
memory of 2009?
Kristy: Cruising
the Nayarit Coast in Cat Slatinsky's 1972 VW
Classic Bug. After popping a set of aloha racks
on top, she was ready for fun and adventure.
We met lots of new friends when we recruited
for push starts and the Mexican men just jumped
at the opportunity to try to fix the problem
with the Bug (which they could never figure
out, but they all had their theory). There were
loads of great food, fresh margaritas and yummy
waves.
