JettyGirl: A one million
dollar check arrives in your mailbox with a
note that reads, "Half of this amount is
yours and the other half is to benefit the world
around you." How would you spend the money?
Kim Mayer: Money
money money ...I'd give some to seed saver research
lovers ie. Vandana Shiva, so she could dethrone
the Monsanto monstrosity. Some to tree huggin'
political people so they'd enforce mandatory
city fruit tree planting parties. Some
to ocean protection people ...come on.
I'd buy the studio I live in and go gray with
a smile.
JG: Describe the best surfboard
you've ever ridden and why it was special to
you.
Kim: 7'6"
thick chunky Kanoa single fin ...some sweet
man gave it to me one day. It had an amazing
mind of it's own and guided me through middle
peak bumps and wove through droves. I followed
its lead and loved the ride. It unfortunately
took it's own life in '09.
JG: If you could travel
back to any time in history and hang with one
person while they go about their daily activities,
who would it be and why?
Kim: Maybe the
duke. Yep, Duke Kahanamoku.
JG: For thirty days you're
stuck on a desert island with one book, one
song, one surf movie and one snack food. Which
ones would you choose?
Kim: Some good
fiction, maybe Barbara Kingsolver. Heartbeats
by Jose Gonzales. Innermost Limits of Pure
Fun, Greenough. Chips -n- salsa.
JG: What is your best surf-related
memory of 2009?
Kim: Dad's 6'8"
Al Merrick, Pleasure Point early December session.
