JettyGirl: A one million
dollar check arrives in your mailbox with a
note that reads, "Half of this amount is
yours and the other half is to benefit the world
around you." How would you spend the money?
Emilie Sanscartier
: To benefit the world around me ...maybe I
should go for poor people but I'll go for my
friends and family. I would definitely buy a
chalet up north Québec for my mom and
my four brothers to go riding every weekend.
Get back to snow with a hot chocolate and friends,
that would feel real good. I think I would build
up a park with some good rails to jam with friends
and shoot for fun.
For
my part, $500 000, I think I would build up
a massive project on extreme sports and film
undiscovered spots with Red and by helicopter.
I'm 19 years old, there is so much I would like
to do with this money! One thing's for sure,
it won't go in the bank!
JG: Describe the best surfboard
you've ever ridden and why it was special to
you.
Emilie: The best
surfboard I have ever ridden is actually my
own board, haha. How good is that? It’s
special because it belonged to my friend Rachel
Barry and every year I buy hers. They are all
9'0", not too light and have a lot of spoon.
They are perfect for noseriding—when you
are a noserider, haha. I'm still learning but
I'd say it's a good one for me because I know
it's a good board and I have to ride it right.
JG: If you could travel
back to any time in history and hang with one
person while they go about their daily activities,
who would it be and why?
Emilie: My Swedish
friends who have this surf sort-of school called
Surfakademin. They are traveling with bunch
of other Swedish from Biarritz in the summer
to Costa Rica in the winter, passing by the
Maldives & Galicia in Spain to teach them
how to surf. They are super connected to the
ocean, food and yoga. They are fun to hang out
with and love the simple life. They taught me
how to surf and I think for that it will always
feel good to get back into the water with them.
JG: For thirty days you're
stuck on a desert island with one book, one
song, one surf movie and one snack food. Which
ones would you choose?
Emilie: Alicia,
(sur la planche) by Sasha, 80's new wave trailer
song of our next movie, definitely Sipping
Jetstreams and some couscous and feta cheese.
JG: What is your best surf-related
memory of 2009?
Emilie: My first
hang five even though I let it die into the
wave because I didn't want to lose it by stepping
back. Wow! How good it that? It was the end
of summer 2009 in a spot southwest of France
called Hendaye. On this day, it was supposed
to be cold, windy and rainy. Perfect glassy
lines peeling for us, and we were alone, me
and my Swedish friends on a magic day.
