JettyGirl: A one million
dollar check arrives in your mailbox with a
note that reads, "Half of this amount is
yours and the other half is to benefit the world
around you." How would you spend the money?
Cori Schumacher:
The $250,000 would be given to Surf For Life
to aid the Bri Bri down in Costa Rica, $250,000
would go to micro-finance loans for women in
Uganda, the rest would be dispersed among friends
and family to pay off all loans and debts so
we can live as close to freedom as we are able.
JG: Describe the best surfboard
you've ever ridden and why it was special to
you.
Cori: The best
surfboard I've ever ridden was a 6 ft. single-fin,
early '70s shortboard Donald Takayama shaped
for me several years ago. I had a session with
it at double overhead South Ponto that blew
my mind. I had never experienced what a single
fin shortboard could do on waves of that size.
The tight turns in the pocket convinced me that
three fins are not necessarily the best fin
configuration. Until that point, I pretty much
saw single fins as quaint left-overs from the
past. That board handed me a fat slice of humble
pie that day and changed the way I viewed concepts
from the past forever.
JG: If you could travel
back to any time in history and hang with one
person while they go about their daily activities,
who would it be and why?
Cori: I'd like
to hang with the Buddha. Looking at all the
religions on the planet, I can't help but notice
the peace and thoughtfulness of Buddhism. There
haven't been any Buddhist witch hunts or Buddhist
crusades or Buddhist bombings or Buddhist terrorists
...I think that Buddha did an exceptional job
shaping a message that to this day, makes the
world a better place.
JG: For thirty days you're
stuck on a desert island with one book, one
song, one surf movie and one snack food. Which
ones would you choose?
Cori: God Emperor
of Dune, Frank Herbert. Black Hearted
Love, PJ Harvey. Five Summer Stories.
Turkey jerky.
JG: What is your best surf-related
memory of 2009?
Cori: There was
one random day this summer when Maria and I
decided to surf Pipe's in Encinitas. We suited
up, paddled out and over the course of the next
several hours (two sessions) got the chance
to surf with my mom (Jeannette Prince), my dad
(Craig Schumacher), Linda Benson, Kelly Sloan,
Jamie Lagardere, Summer Romero, Danielle Burt,
Malia Fuertes, Jennifer Flanigan, Tiffany Seale,
Sormarie Nieves and Kelly Nicely. It wasn't
planned and probably wouldn't have happened
if we had! The smiles and joy from everyone
reminded me of why I still do this surfing thing.
