JettyGirl: A one million
dollar check arrives in your mailbox with a
note that reads, "Half of this amount is
yours and the other half is to benefit the world
around you." How would you spend the money?
Cindy Hayward:
So, this is assuming the other half has already
been used to benefit the world around me in
various yet responsible ways...
I would pay off my bills and those of my siblings,
get decent health insurance (if there is such
a thing), put some money away for my niece and
nephews, pay off our outstanding business loans-maybe
sell the restaurant (don't tell my fiance) and
travel for a few years, take all the old slides
from when I was a kid and get them transferred
to digital format, buy a new digital camera-
I still shoot film from an 18 year old camera,
buy the house we live in.
JG: Describe the best surfboard
you've ever ridden and why it was special to
you.
Cindy: 9'0"
Local Motion Triple Stringer with a wooden tail
block shaped by Mike Diffenderfer. Super fun
wave catcher, I love love love this board. It
was passed down by a friend (who got into a
bad lifestyle of drinking and drugs and stopped
surfing) to my fiance who gave it to me and
it is by far more fun than any board I've had
custom made for myself.
JG: If you could travel
back to any time in history and hang with one
person while they go about their daily activities,
who would it be and why?
Cindy: My mom who
passed away 8 years ago. I would go back in
time and hang with her again. She was always
doing fun things and lived her life at such
a nice pace. She took the time to walk to friends'
houses and sit down for a few hours and have
a cup of coffee and talk to her friends face
to face. She loved the beach but with her Irish
skin would always have sunburned feet no matter
how much sunscreen she used, it was pretty cute.
Our last big trip together before she died was
to visit my brother on Kauai—it was truly
a great vacation.
JG: For thirty days you're
stuck on a desert island with one book, one
song, one surf movie and one snack food. Which
ones would you choose?
Cindy: The
World According to Garp by John Irving.
Lost In The Supermarket by The Clash.
Searching for Tom Curren (old) or Dear
& Yonder (new). Tortilla chips with
fresh guac and salsa.
JG: What is your best surf-related
memory of 2009?
Cindy: The annual
surf camping trip to San O with my guy friends
over the summer. We've known each other since
we were 13! We drive down from SF with a bunch
of random boards and camp for a week and just
surf whichever trail we're closest to—we
try not to drive around and waste gas looking
for better surf—just take what is given
to us out front and this year was super fun
...good waves and great weather. Although the
campers next to us had a 50" TV hooked
up to the back of their truck and were watching
stupid movies all night outside which really
was a distraction from having a beautiful fire
and watching the stars above. California car
camping at its finest!
