JettyGirl: A one million
dollar check arrives in your mailbox with a
note that reads, "Half of this amount is
yours and the other half is to benefit the world
around you." How would you spend the money?
Chanelle Sladics:
Great question! Some of the money would go towards
a house on the North Shore of Oahu, and some
towards my current mortgage in North County
San Diego. I would get solar panels, and go
off the grid as much as possible! The charity
portion would go completely towards a charity
I am currently starting. More info will soon
be available as I am in the process of trademarking
but I will release our mission: To bring awareness
to kids and teens about the circle of life,
teaching them the necessities in preserving
our planet, the value and process of recycling
and composting, and how to grow food naturally!
Our mission is to utilize influential people
(Professional Athletes, Artists, Musicians,
Actors) of the community to adopt their local
school, ultimately sweeping our nation into
a new standard of education, one where we are
connected to our food, and our environment—Planet
Earth.
JG: Describe the best surfboard
you've ever ridden and why it was special to
you.
Chanelle: Mmm,
probably one of Megan Abubo's boards! She works
with her shaper to make some magic boards! I
really love my last 5'9" that I traded
with her! Also adopted my own taceama (spelling)...the
board is magic for poopy Cali days... 5'4",
wide, quad fin, huge squash tail equals magic.
I also have to say that I am excited for my
new SUP paddle from Jodie Nelson this coming
summer...she got me hooked!
JG: If you could travel
back to any time in history and hang with one
person while they go about their daily activities,
who would it be and why?
Chanelle: John
Lennon ...I would love to be a part of his peace
movements, uniting humanity through music, and
around intelligent, connected souls who love
the earth we live on, want to protect it, and
our rights!
JG: For thirty days you're
stuck on a desert island with one book, one
song, one surf movie and one snack food. Which
ones would you choose?
Chanelle: I'm going
to assume there are coconuts on the island,
in order for me to survive. Book: Intelligence
by Osho; Song: Jack Johnson's Banana Pancakes;
Surf movie: definitely Sipping Jetstreams,
Snow movie: That's It, That's All; Snack food:
bananas.
JG: What is your best surf-related
memory of 2009?
Chanelle: Last
summer I didn't get too crazy in the water,
though I did spend some quality time surfing
Pipeline when it was small, thanks to Claire,
Rochelle, and Leah! I finally started to understand
where I should be out there ...but you can always
count on rogue sets so it's always scary! My
best memory was a Fall '09 session, 3-4 foot
solid Pipe. I was surfing Gums, and admiring
Pipe (and my closest view to date)...and finally
mustered up the confidence to catch some wide
ones. It felt really good to be out there with
all of that moving water, and just trying to
make the drops on the corners! There is sooooo
much energy out there, and it's one of my favorite
spots on the North Shore to free dive ...so
it definitely has a special place in my heart!
