While faltering economies, political turmoil and
energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Stacey Guy: I can't
think of just one thing but I did a lot of traveling,
surfed some awesome waves! Made a few changes
this year that worked out great, so I'm stoked!!
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
SG: I think the first
time I stood on a surfboard was when I was about
14 years old...I started kinda late! I used to
bodyboard, and when I got bored with that I took
my dad's old surfboard down to the beach and stood
on my first or second try!! The board I started
on was SICK, it was a 5'5" pink twin fin
with removable middle fin, it was so thick and
had about 12 channels on the bottom! It was rad!
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
SG: I'm currently
riding a 5'8" x 18 x 2 squash tail shaped
by Baron Stander. I like boards that don't have
a lot of rocker and that have a little vee in
the tail...usually single concave! I've got a
few single fins and twin fins in my garage for
those small fun days.
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
SG: Hmmm, haha not
really, maybe Dane Reynolds at the moment 'cuz
his surfing is just amazing!
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
SG: Wow, I'm not
sure who will pull it but I reckon it will be
some kind of massive air for sure!!
For those of you who like to
jump around instead of going one by one, here's
the complete list of surfers...

Caption: I've seen quite a few images of Stacey
Guy lately and the common theme seems to be that
her fins are never in the water. Fin free snaps,
lipslides and big frontside airs are all part
of this fantastically talented South African's
approach. I hope one day to have the opportunity
to shoot with her myself. Photo: Pierre Tostee
