While faltering economies, political turmoil and
energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Silvana Lima: The
best thing that happend to me was being the second
female surfer in the world and now my dream is
to go up to the highest place of the podium. I
wanna win some WCT events and hopefully be the
world's female champion in 2009.
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
SL: The first time
I stood up on a surfboard was in Paracuru (Ceara),
the city where I come from, with my brother. He
used to surf and he decided to teach me. I loved
it from the first time and since back them I didn't
stop.
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
SL: My favorite board
is 5'8" round pin, but I like to try new
equipment and I do that every year. I am always
testing new fins and different shapes. Actually
one thing I miss is having an equipment sponsor.
I have my shaper back in Brazil, Udo Bastos, but
I don't have fins or grips support and I hope
this year I can make it, because it is good to
have options and try different designs in different
waves.
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
SL: Yes, my biggest
hero is GOD. For all the opportunities He gave
me and also for giving me this gift of being able
to surf.
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
SL: Maybe this maneuver
will be an air maneuver, that's what I think,
and hopefully the surfer is gonna be me!! I will
train a lot to make it happen!
For those of you who like to
jump around instead of going one by one, here's
the complete list of surfers...

Caption: Not the typical move you see in a heat,
but then again, Silvana Lima is not your typical
surfer. If the wisdom of Silvana's peers pans
out this year, the best move of 2009 will come
from this incredibly talented Brasilian surfer.
I wish I could be there when it happens! Photo:
