While faltering economies, political turmoil and
energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Serena Brooke: The
best thing that happened to me in 2008 was waking
up each day and going surfing! For 2009 my wishes
are that the world continues to readjust itself
and evens out its resources making the greedy
ones responsible for their actions and that there
is more love and peace spread instead of fear
and greed.
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
SB: I was surfing
across the road from my house, I was about 14
years old and I was riding an old single fin about
6'6" long. I was super stoked.
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
SB: My current fav
board is a Nick Blair 5'10x 17 7/8ths x 2/1/16th.
Yes, in 2009 I will try some fun boards. I want
to ride an alaia and a few other funky boards.
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
SB: I don't really
have any heroes but I look up to whoever is having
the most fun on tour this year...and that's probably
been Steff!
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
SB: I think Carrissa
Moore will do some crazy air or Sally Fitz, she
was doing some cool airs on our boat trip.
For those of you who like to
jump around instead of going one by one, here's
the complete list of surfers...

Still, there's something to be said for a nice
clean wrap off the incoming section. Serena Brooke
on the first wave of our only session this summer,
a whopping 30-minute surf in onshore Oceanside.
Serena has been one of my favorite surfers since
I saw her at Lowers early in her career. A decade
or so later, she's still turning heads. Photo:
