While faltering economies, political turmoil and
energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Rebecca Woods: Best
thing that happened was probably winning a comp
in Brasil and then celebrating my birthday in
style at a massive Billabong party in Rio De Janeiro.
Something I will never forget!
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
RW: I was riding
a foam surfboard, my dad was pushing me and my
sister in. She has a disability and got up to
drop knee position. I got all competitive with
her and stood up all the way to shore then got
smashed on the shorey and didn't go back 'til
I was 12!
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
RW: Favorite board
is the 7 curve by James Cheal (aka Chilli surfboards).
I would like to try a quad and am currently just
riding a 5'5" fish for a bit of fun after
a long year of competing.
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
RW: At the moment
my heroes are my mentors in women's surfing: Rochelle
Ballard, KK, Megan Abubo, Serena Brooke. They
are all stepping off tour and into other things
and deserve so much more recognition for the time
and energy devoted to mine and so many others'
beloved sport, so again thank you!!!
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
RW: I think Malia
Manuel will pull an complete air 360 full
rotation in the air!
For those of you who like to
jump around instead of going one by one, here's
the complete list of surfers...

I've shot or surfed with. She has a great sense
of humor too. Over the summer we were shooting
from the water and two totally clueless surfers
not only cut her off but then ran right into each
other a second later. She just laughed it off
then blew the top off the next set. Photo: Chris
