While faltering economies, political turmoil and
energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Pam Burridge: Enjoyed
another year watching my kids grow up. Also, caught
18 waves in 36 minutes at Green Island on a 6'0"
and only snaked one guy! So I am looking forward
to another year of motherhood and the odd good
to occasionally great surf. I'm hopeful I can
be a part of the solution rather than the problem
as far as the world goes.
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
PB: Been standing
up on Kentucky fried coolites for years before
but my first wave on my home made fiberglass 5'6"
at Harbord aka Freshie was legend. I was ten.
It was July. I had no wetsuit as far as I can
remember.
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
PB: I love my 5'6"
fish. I love my pair of 6' shortboards. I love
my 6'6". I hope to love my 9'1" that
Santa brought to town (ie Mark the hubbie made
it).
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
PB: I admire many
people and some of them are surfers, but let's
say that the world champs both had me cheering
their efforts in the water this year. On ya Kelly
and Steph.
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
PB: Silvana is always
awesome so I expect she will be pushing it but
if she wants to charge for a title she may have
to be more of a machine than a flash in the pan
so that will decide that. The young girls will
push the slightly older girls to crank it up but
I will sound like a suck up and go for Steph Gilmore
pulling the sickest move of the year, probably
a huge waft air with style all the way through
(no tow in tho').
For those of you who like to
jump around instead of going one by one, here's
the complete list of surfers...

Caption: What could be a better combination that
a wetsuit and diamonds? This album cover is still
one of my favorites...and Pam Burridge is still
one of my favorite all-time surfers. The 1990
ASP Women's World Champion, Pam had one of the
smoothest styles the tour has ever seen. Pam was
inducted into the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame
in 1997.
