While faltering economies, political turmoil and
energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Megan Abubo: I found
myself because I was lost at sea somewhere, now
I'm found and very sure of my future and life
path I guess. 30 can do that to you. It is a confusing
time of your life and now this past year has given
me so many learning experiences. I am excited
to start 2009 on the right foot and with a positive
mind and spirit.
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
MA: I was 9 and it
was at Baby Queens, Waikiki on a styrofoam board
I found in the trash.
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
MA: My favorite board
is 6'3" by Eric Arakawa because that means
I am surfing good waves and it's pretty solid
size and Eric makes amazing boards for good waves.
I have been riding a finless board every now and
then...hard to ride but fun.
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
MA: My mother because
she gave me love and life. Rell Sunn because she
fought to the end and gave every part of herself
to the next generation to learn from. And Lisa
Andersen, she made women's surfing what it is
today.
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
MA: Maybe Mel Bartels
or Silvana Lima will do some crazy air only the
boys do right now. I also think that Keala will
get some big barrels somewhere.
For those of you who like to
jump around instead of going one by one, here's
the complete list of surfers...

Caption: Usually whitewater shots are unusable
but Megan Abubo banks this one with such authority
that it works. I love the speedy grabrail and
the punch of fins out the back. Hopefully Megan
will stick around Oceanside again this summer
so we can try for a few more images. For those
into trivia, Megan is also incredibly talented
on a longboard. Photo: Chris Grant / JettyGirl.com
