While faltering economies, political turmoil and
energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Lauren Sweeney: Graduating
college would have to be the best thing that happened
for me in 2008. Knowing that I can commit to a
long term goal and see it through has inspired
me to set bigger goals for myself. I'm hoping
to surf a lot better in 2009, possibly do the
WQS, and go on some epic adventure!
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
LS: Can't remember
my first wave. I think I was really young and
it had to have been a white water nugget on the
inside. I think I was riding my brother's 1980's
Donald Takyama shortboard.
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
LS: My favorite board
is my standard 5'8 shortboard because it works
in everything. I'll be fortunate to get boards
in 2009 with this downtrodden economy.
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
LS: My hero is my
dad because he works harder than anyone I know
and he rips too!
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
LS: Silvana Lima
doing a frontside air reverse.
For those of you who like to
jump around instead of going one by one, here's
the complete list of surfers...

Caption: What's not to like about Lauren Sweeney?
There has to be a short list of people in the
world who can launch airs on a surfboard, install
a dryer, and write poetry all in the same day.
She's a photographer's dream...gets up early for
the morning light, is totally amped to surf in
virtually all conditions, and absolutely goes
off wherever she paddles out. Definitely an inspirational
surfer! Photo: Chris Grant / JettyGirl.com
