While faltering economies, political turmoil and
energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Kym Campbell: I released
my debut album 'So Alive' mid-2008 so that was
definitely a highlight for me, as well as having
4 tracks from my album included on Australia Longboarding
Magazine's 'Project X' surf DVD. What I'm probably
most hopeful for next year is to release the album
in Japan and do a national tour in Australia.
I love traveling!
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
KC: The first time
I stood up on a surfboard I was surfing out front
of my house in Miami on the Gold Coast, Australia.
I was riding a 6'10 Mini Malibu and I was super
stoked!!
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
KC: At the moment
I mostly ride my 6'1 shortboard with a rounded
square tail. But I'm headed for Bali for Christmas
so I might take a couple other sizes as well.
If I have enough money next year I would love
to get another fish shortboard shaped and also
start riding some single fin boards.
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
KC: I have a lot
of heroes but for 2008 I think my mom would have
to be number one, she has been such a great support
throughout my music career and she has always
supported me in following my dreams. I think Tristan
Prettyman would come next - I am just loving her
music at the moment and she is such an inspiration
to me as a musician.
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
KC: I would say Melanie
Bartels for sure. She has such a cool style!
For those of you who like to
jump around instead of going one by one, here's
the complete list of surfers...
