| JettyGirl:
While faltering economies, political turmoil and
energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Kyla Langen: Barack
Obama, agave nectar, fleet foxes, Rio De Janeiro,
lemongrass, raw almond butter, garage band.
For 2009 I hope for beats and beets.
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
KL: I don't remember,
but my parents told me it was in front of my Grandma's
house in Carlsbad...on my dad's Rusty thruster
he made into a twin-fin after breaking off the
tail.
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
KL: I'm loving
my 5'9" TPatterson single fin. And I'm curious
about wood.
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
KL: Tug the cat:
Lives a simple, healthy, happy life. Entertains
herself by climbing trees, stretching, meditating,
and loving. Also, Chris Sharma.
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
KL: Sarah Beardmore
doing some crazy windmill or jackhammer breakdance
maneuver on some foreign dance floor.
For those of you who like to
jump around instead of going one by one, here's
the complete list of surfers...

lifted off the ground without the support of Kyla
Langen. Her skills as a writer and interviewer,
along with her world-class talents on a surfboard,
brought immediate legitimacy to our fledgling
project. One of my all-time favorite photo subjects,
Kyla has a huge future in whatever path she chooses
to take in life. Photo: Chris Grant / JettyGirl.com
