While faltering economies, political turmoil and
energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Kim Mayer: There
isn't one thing in particular. It's more of a
feeling. More than a feeeeeeeelin! more than a
feeeeeeelin'....yeah, I'm feelin' good. 2009,
well, I'm just waiting for the rivermouth to break...oh,
and how about unity.
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
KM: Doyle at Cowells
with my best friends.
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
KM: 5'7" single
fin shaped by Matt Tognoli. Just wanna ride it
all.
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
KM: So many heroes
but here are a few that hit me right now....Henry
David Thoreau - for deeply appreciating nature,
sharing his philosophy and views through writing,
and living a simple yet meaningful life. Slater-
for being physically and mentally in tune with
what he does. My parents - for their unconditional
love and support.
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
KM: Bad with names
but is it a rodeo flip? One of those aerial flips
that Dane's always doing. Silvana'll do it. Or
has she already?
For those of you who like to
jump around instead of going one by one, here's
the complete list of surfers...

Caption: The original inspiration for JettyGirl
and still one of my favorite surfers is Santa
Cruz' Kim Mayer. More often than not, when I see
Kim she's laughing or smiling or singing out loud...that's
what makes this image fun for me. It's another
side of Kim that I don't often see. The funny
thing is, seriously three seconds later while
at the water's edge amongst her competitors, the
announcer asked Kim for a dance move or two. She
danced...then blitzed the heat. Photo: Chris Grant
