While faltering economies, political turmoil and
energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Karlee Mackie: Yeah,
go Obama! I think this year was a good year for
me for setting up for next year! Few new little
projects in the mix. I did an amazing boat trip
on the Mangalui with K.K., Sophia , Jess Miley,
Sarah Beardmore, Woodsy, Easky, Swilly and Bali.
I can't wait for next year's trip!
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
KM: Hmmm, I remember
my first green wave better. It was at Point Plomer
on the mid north coast on a 6'10 Byrne surfboard
, with my dad, bro and best mate Jodi. It took
me an hour to catch it as I thought I would get
sucked under the suck rock out there where you
take off. It was such an amazing feeling as everyone
had caught a wave and was paddling back out hooting
me as I finally caught mine ....so stoked!
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
KM: I'm riding a
magic board at the moment, a 5'9" board shaped
by Aido, Adrian Wheeler. I love all sorts of boards.
I have 5'1" pink disc and a few fishes. Maybe
I might go pester Aido about some fun boards as
he has a new shaping bay set up!
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
KM: Yeah, my family
, as we got through a mega scare with my dad having
a massive heart attack, they are very strong and
close and we still get to share a wave and a laugh
with the mac daddy. Also, my nan Masako Kunino,
who is a wealth of inspiration and wisdom.
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
KM: Women's surfing
is and has always been exciting, simply for the
fact that it's evolved so much and is full of
all sorts of different characters past and present
that have all been a part of where it is today.
I think Steph could or maybe Carrisa , also I
wouldn't rule out Mel Bartels or Silvana Lima.
For those of you who like to
jump around instead of going one by one, here's
the complete list of surfers...
