JettyGirl: While faltering economies, political turmoil
and energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Julie Cox: As intense
as '08 was, I got to spend a lot of quality moments
with friends and family. We're all so spread out
that I really cherish these moments and think
back to these times as highlights. I also bought
a house, which was a huge step for my free-spirited
lifestyle... it's nice to plant some real roots.
For 2009 I'm really hopeful and excited for the
change in the US government. I hope to see a positive
shift in the economy, politics, & environment.
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
JC: I was at the
Ventura Harbor riding a Doyle during a road trip
for Jr. Lifeguards.... we were supposed to be
learning to windsurf, but those sails were heavy
for an 8 year old! Dang, that was 20 years ago...
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
JC: My favorite board
at this particular moment is my "Emerald".
Jed Noll has put my vision into action. The thing
noserides insanely well, while its not too heavy
or bulky. 9'2" square tail.
A
far as innovation, Jed's making our twin fin "Ruby"
into a quad, which will be fun to see how the
down-the-line speed along with maneuverability
changes. We'll be messing with stringers, fins,
blanks, glass, paint processes, wood, etc. in
'09. Forward motion... The most exciting part
of the Jule Collection this year will be the opening
of a Jed Noll Surfboards retail shop in San Clemente
with the factory directly behind. Soooo excited
to take the train up there and get crafty in the
factory more often.
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
JC: Oh man, I look
up to a lot of people.. I like having mentors
to help me if I need it, to inspire me, to show
me the way, and show me what is possible... Thomas
Campbell, Linda Benson, Rell Sunn, Kristy Murphy,
Bev Sanders, Shelley Merrick, my Mom, Dad and
brothers, the Collings family, Ashley Lloyd, Jed
Noll to name a few.
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
JC: Yep, women's
surfing is getting stronger, more crazy and wonderful
everyday. The best maneuver you can do this year
is to go see these surf movies: "The Present"
and "Dear and Yonder...they will be the highlights
of 2009 no doubt.
For those of you who like to
jump around instead of going one by one, here's
the complete list of surfers...
