While faltering economies, political turmoil and
energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Jacqueline Silva:
The best think that happened to me in 2008 was
my victory in Portugal on the WQS 6 star. My hope
for 2009 is to finish in the top 5 of the WCT.
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
JS: The first time
I stood up on a surfboard was 20 years ago with
my brother Leandro at my home break Barra Da Lago,
a place that I love. It was amazing...I was riding
a 5'5" very old board but good for the age.
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
JS: My current favorite
board is my 5'9" round pintail shaped by
my old brother Leandro Silva. I would like to
try a DHD board. I will order one for the Gold
Coast and I also want to use different kinds of
fins for sure.
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
JS: My whole family
are my heroes...because they have supported me
since I started to surf and they gave me all I
needed to be who I am now.
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
JS: In 2009 we will
see the new generation, we're gonna see maneuvers
like aerials and off the lips by the young surfers.
For those of you who like to
jump around instead of going one by one, here's
the complete list of surfers...

Caption: In our opinion, the cutback just doesn't
get the attention it deserves. There are kids
surfing today who can launch airs at will but
who couldn't do a cutback to save their life.
For perfect cutback technique, look no further
than Brasil's Jacqueline Silva who has one of
the smoothest turns on tour. On this glassy Malibu
right, Jacqueline sliced three of these in a row.
