While faltering economies, political turmoil and
energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Erica Hosseini: Biggest
thing that happened to me in '08 was I had my
gall bladder removed... Emergency Surgery. As
far as the biggest GOOD NEWS in '08, I won 7k
in the VQS championships in my backyard!!!
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
EH: I was riding
a log of a board that was my next door neighbor's,
and he left his garage unlocked so we could come
and use them as we pleased.
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
EH: My favorite
board is a 5'10" swallow tail. Fast, light
and maneuverable in small, good 'ol Newport. I
will try whatever gets thrown my way, but I don't
have any big plans to throw my 5'10" swallow
tail out the window.
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
EH: I don't really
have any heroes. I'm more inspired by people who
have a good story to tell.
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
EH: My predicted
nominations for best female maneuver are: Silvana
Lima, Carissa Moore, Claire Bevilacqua. As far
as what they pull out of their hats, I have no
idea.

Caption: It's hard to believe in 2009 but twenty
years ago at many spots, months and months would
go by without seeing a girl in the water. Newport
has always had some ripping surfers though. Back
when I was living in Newport, it was pretty common
to surf with then-future-world-champ Lisa Anderson
and before Lisa, ASP standout Tricia Gill. Erica
Hosseini is the latest in a line of fantastic
Newport surfers and has enjoyed great success
