| JettyGirl:
While faltering economies, political turmoil and
energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Cori Schumacher:
The best thing that happened to me in 2008 was
getting married. The thing that I am most hopeful
for in 2009 is that human beings, especially those
who live in the United States, will continue to
pursue a sustainable, inclusive culture that celebrates
diversity and creativity in every form.
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
CS: I was five years
old when I surfed for the first time. The board
was a blue and yellow BZ single fin soft-board
that I took out at Dog Beach in Ocean Beach.
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
CS: My current favorite
board is a 9'0" Takayama "DT-2"
that has an experimental rocker Donald cooked
up for me recently. I paired it with a smaller
center fin than I am used to, and DT's hydrofoil
side-fins. This is my "experimental"
board moving into 2009... it has left me positively
speechless on more than one occasion.
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
CS: My heroes are
people who step into and through their fears with
grace and dignity, while maintaining their integrity
and honoring everyone around them as equals. It
takes a lot of courage to accept that sometimes,
the contents of our hearts place us outside of
what the mainstream finds "acceptable"
and most of what you see from people is a propensity
to hide (from) their truth. To go out on a limb,
to risk everything, to follow your intuition and
brave disapproval... all for your truth... this
is heroic.
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
CS: Frontside, double
hand grab, looping somethin'-or-other by a miniature
grommeton more stoked than Stoke itself!!
For those of you who like to
jump around instead of going one by one, here's
the complete list of surfers...

Champ Cori Schumacher a few months ago. It was
an evening session, about thigh-high and windy
and Cori surfed it with such gusto that it actually
looked like the surf was really good. About two
weeks later, Cori won the 3rd Annual Roxy Jam
Cardiff in front of a stoked hometown crowd. I
would not be one bit surprised to see Cori collect
another world title in 2009. Photo: Chris Grant
