While faltering economies, political turmoil and
energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Ashley Lloyd: A lot
of really wonderful things happened to me in 2008.
I met the man of my dreams, I remembered how much
I love shaping, I picked up the nick-name Ashrey
Royd, I released a CD that I've been working on
for a while called "The Serenata Road Recordings."
I am hopeful that 2009 will be sparked with contagious
joy, happiness, and productivity.
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
AL: Third Point Malibu...
on a Zuma Jay twin fin. Not sure how old I was...7
or 10 or something.
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
AL: Oh! That is a
tuffy. My 9'5" Bing Ashley Lloyd Signature
Model pin tail is treating me pretty well. I've
also been enjoying this rounded diamond tail that
I made for this movie coming out called "Dear
and Yonder".
Designs...I
just made a Phil Edwards replica 10'2" that
should be fun. I want experiment more with making
extremely large surfboards that make you go so
fast that you can hear the wind in your ears.
Materials...Bio-foam and other products that are
moving in the direction of less environmental
impact while still being able to make a quality
surfboard. Fin configurations...I am working on
a fin model with Rainbow Fin Company for a single
fin longboard.
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
AL: My heroes are......
I have a lot of different heroes for different
reasons. Immediately, looking at the wagging tail
that lies next to me, it's my dog. He loves unconditionally.
Zeuf and Frosty Hesson are huge life/surfing heroes
of mine.
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
AL: I don't know.
There's so many girls getting insanely good at
surfing that I can't keep up with what they're
doing and what it's called. I'd be stoked to see
it though.
For those of you who like to
jump around instead of going one by one, here's
the complete list of surfers...

Caption: It's so refreshing to meet a legend that
is fully deserving of the moniker. Meeting up
with Ashley Lloyd in Santa Cruz was the highlight
of my summer. We shot some photos, ate a delicious
homemade salad, checked out some boards she's
shaped, and I was treated to a spontaneous performance
of an unreleased song. Ashley very well may be
the most talented person I've ever met. Photo:
