While faltering economies, political turmoil and
energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Anna Garaway: 2008...I
had a few good trips getting lost in Central America
which always leaves me with a smile and some good
stories, but I think going back to school has
been the best and most challenging thing for me.
For 2009 I'm hoping for more surf days during
the school semester and I'm looking forward to
all the changes to come. Be it good or bad, we
are all in for an adventure.
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
AG: My first time
surfing was for sure on a BZ Doyle at Cowells.
Don't remember how old I was, but I do know I
stood up because the guy teaching me was holding
me up by the back of my wetsuit.
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
AG: Right now I'm
riding a 5'11" SB that I really like. I'm
thinking about ordering a 9'6" noserider
from Carl Olsen, but that's just talk right now...may
wait 'til summer for that!
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
AG: My heroes are
the people who are the best at whatever it is
they do. It takes a lot of hard work, training
and discipline to get where they are.
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
AG: I think it will
be from Silvana Lima, Melanie Bartels or Coco
Ho and it will be done during a World Tour contest.
I'm not sure what it will be, but all three of
them are exciting surfers to watch. Can't wait
to see it when it happens ;)
For those of you who like to
jump around instead of going one by one, here's
the complete list of surfers...

warmer surroundings. One of the highlights of
our year was sharing a Leucadia surf session with
Anna. She is warm, kind and has an amazing frontside
snap. A true ambassador for women's surfing and
a purveyor of stoke wherever she goes. Photo:
