While faltering economies, political turmoil and
energy issues dominated most of the headlines
during the past year, much of 2008's good news
slipped through the cracks. What's the best thing
that happened to you in 2008 and what are you
most hopeful for in 2009?
Amee Donohoe: Best
thing was realizing that I wasn't affected by
the economics of the world...when you've got nothing
you can't lose anything. I'm hoping that the world
will stand up and see the destructive way we are
living needs to change.
JG: Tell us about the first
time you ever stood up on a surfboard. Where was
it and what were you riding?
AD: I was about 7
and it was on a boogie board at my local Macmasters
Beach on the central coast.
JG: What is your current
favorite board? In 2009 do you have any plans
to experiment with different surfboard designs,
materials or fin configurations?
AD: I snapped my
favorite diverse board in France. I've been playing
around with fins lately in Hawaii. I've been getting
into riding some solid retro boards, a few single
fins, twinnies and quads...always fun to mix it
up. I've even looked into getting one of those
planks of wood.
JG: Do you have any heroes?
If so, who and why?
AD: Superman is cool.
I like the suit...I feel pretty hot getting into
tight lycra.
JG: In 2009 we'll see the
best single maneuver ever done by a female surfer.
Who do you think will pull the move and what do
you think it will be?
AD: Silvana Lima,
superman suit and all!
For those of you who like to
jump around instead of going one by one, here's
the complete list of surfers...

Caption: Last year I had the privilege of shooting
with Amee Donohoe a few times. This fantastic
Australian surfer has such an insane layback snap...an
effortless, tail-free, pivot-around-a-buried-nose
type of turn that she pulls off with ease. Although
our schedules didn't align this year, I look forward
to shooting with Amee again. She's super funny,
uber-intelligent and just plain rips. Photo: Chris
