2008 ASP WOMEN'S WORLD TOUR
PREVIEW - by Prue Jeffries
The 2008 ASP Women's World Tour will
most likely go down in surfing annals as the year a new chapter
will be written for performance levels. A new era has truly
begun. The evolutionary wave started with Sophia Mulanovich
and Chelsea Georgeson. Groomed from pre-adolescence, for their
time on the victory dais, they hit the WCT in 2000. Not long
after, they seized their world titles with dimple-cheeked
grins and new school power moves. They were the forerunners
of a new world of female surfers.
2008 is the
New World. Stephanie Gilmore burst onto the WCT scene before
she had finished high school following the torch Sophia and
Chelsea bore. She now finds herself as fearless leader with
a meteoric ascension to the World Championship throne. Below
her, the ratings list is filled with exuberant, focused and
somewhat maverick talent such as Silvana Lima, Jesse Miley-Dyer,
Nicola Atherton and Karina Petroni. Fierce World Title chasing
stalwarts such as Layne Beachley, Megan Abubo and Serena Brooke
will act as a fulcrum to consolidate the new paradigm keeping
the talented new breed on their competitive toes.
