Great in 2008 - Thirty
Surfers Look Into the New Year. Layne Beachley. |

JettyGirl:
Any New Year's resolutions for 2008?
Layne Beachley: I tend not to make New Year's Resolutions
because they are never kept. I'm so goal orientated that I
don't need to add any more expectations on myself.
JG: If you were to donate time or money to a charitable organization or cause in 2008, what would it be and why?
LB: I am heading off to Rwanda in June to assist in raising
awareness for an organization called ABANA
which is all about helping people help themselves. I am designing
a "kaftan" that we will teach the local women to
make and then allow them to sell to give them further skills
and independence. We will also be looking at selling these
through OXFAM and other distribution channels to continue
raising funds.
JG: Judging on any category you find relevant, name five female surfers to watch for in 2008 and why.
LB: Stephanie Gilmore, Coco Ho, Laura Enever, Silvana Lima
and Lee Ann Curren. Steph has just become the first woman
to win a world title in her rookie year on tour but is so
grounded and passionate, making her always fun to be around.
She has many hidden talents such as playing guitar and singing
and slaughtering her competition with a smile on her face.
Coco is an amazing junior talent emerging from Hawaii and
is always so happy, enthusiastic and positive. She is great
fun to surf with. With all the hype surrounding Hawaiian sensation
Carissa Moore, Coco has had the time to refine her skills
under the watchful eye of her ex-pro surfing dad Michael Ho.
I can't wait for her to make the tour! Laura is another Aussie
talent that has had the opportunity to develop her skills
away from the added hype and expectation, and show that she
will be a formidable force on tour in the very near future.
Another smiley face, super grom. These three girls are what
I refer to as "smiling assassins". Silvana Lima
is bloody hungry and wants a world title BAD! Not just for
herself but her whole nation! Such a dynamic surfer with loads
of energy, her progression is pushing all surfers to bury
their rails a little deeper and go a little faster! Lee Ann
Curren has improved so much over the last year or two. What
more do you need to say about her apart from the fact that
she is a Curren!
