Single Wave Thursday featuring Kassia Meador on Jettygirl Online Surf Magazine

Kassia Meador – Single Wave Thursday. One Ride, No Music, Just Surfing.

One thing I’ve noticed about many of my favorite surfers is how they can jump on just about any type of equipment and skillfully ride waves without missing a beat. Longboard stylist, Kassia Meador, is one of those multi-faceted surfers who can surf anything from a high-performance thruster, to a retro-styled twin fin, to a traditional single fin log. I’m not sure if she still rides them, but a number of years back, Kassia began riding a thin, finless, wooden board known as an Alaia.

If you’ve ever seen someone surf an Alaia, you’ll quickly realize that it is a completely different way to ride waves. I’ve seen many people give it a go, only to return to the sand deflated that they either couldn’t catch a wave or the ones they did catch resulted in wipeout after wipeout. For those who push through the initial challenges, however, the reward is a feeling of unadulterated speed, glide, slide, and freedom. On this particular wave in Encinitas a few years back, Kassia Meador glides into a fun, lined-up, glassy left. It’s really fun to watch the nuances that come into play on finless boards—case in point, the subtle drifting Kassia employs as she heads into her 360-degree spin. Landing a floater on an Alaia is no easy task, but Kassia effortlessly pulls one off to finish her ride.

Mexico Calling – Seea 2014 Collection

Since Seea launched their brand a few years back, their products and imagery has struck that difficult balance of being both cutting edge while at the same time reflecting on days gone by. In this clip covering their 2014 Collection, the Seeababes took a trip to Mexico and scored some amazing surf and lots of fun.

Holly Beck has so many of the qualities I look up to in another human being. She’s intelligent, resourceful, organized, goal-oriented and so much more …all wrapped up in a truly down-to-earth and fun-loving personality. On this day in 2009 she took out a new Rusty “Dwart” surfboard and in a crew of some of the top surfers in the world, literally blew the roof off the session as seen in this lightning-fast whip off the section.

One of my favorite Jettygirl days was the one I spent with surfer/shaper/musician, Ashley Lloyd Thompson, at her home in Santa Cruz, California. Watching the ultra-smooth surfing styles of Ashley and her husband, Alex, was a refreshing change of pace. If filming the two of them drawing clean lines in the water wasn’t reward enough, I was blessed even more with a home-grown salad and an impromptu live music performance after the session. It was an epic day through and through!

Amee Donohoe – Single Wave Thursday. One Ride, No Music, Just Surfing.

One of the most underrated surfers I’ve ever met is Australia’s Amee Donohoe. Intelligent, hilarious, and truly one of a kind. This is the last wave I ever saw her surf before she left the tour. A magic, spray-painted, red board under the feet of an uber-talented human being—it doesn’t get any better.

If I may take a slight diversion today… as you all well know, the Roxy Pro Gold Coast ended a few days ago and announcers, media types, and social media outlets rightfully lit up with praise of the women’s performances. While the current crew of World Tour surfers are taking surfing to the next level, my hope is that we never forget those who have come before. Without the benefits of modern equipment, air awareness training, instantaneous video feedback, cameras following their every move, and social media chatter of every type, the surfers of the past pushed the envelope of what was possible then and laid the foundation of what’s possible now. The surfers of today, talented as they may be, are not the starting point but simply the next step in the rich fabric of surfing’s history. Let’s heartily applaud the present, but in equal portions let’s respect and appreciate the past.

Felicity Palmateer – Single Wave Thursday. One Ride, No Music, Just Surfing.

Last summer I was down at the beach for a shoot with some surfers from South America who were here to compete in the Supergirl Pro. I was set up on the right but out of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of Australian surfer, Felicity Palmateer, ripping a left. Having met her the previous summer, I was stoked to see another familiar face in the lineup. After paddling back out, she spun around and caught this fun wave, punctuating it with an explosive hit off the closeout section. Curiously, she proned to the beach after the wave, followed closely behind by Alessa Quizon.

How I missed the entire session of two amazing goofyfoots is beyond me, but to be fair, the rights were firing with Silvana Lima and Courtney Conlogue trading frontside snaps on 150-yard walls. A few minutes after Felicity and Alessa had left the beach, I saw Courtney ramble across the rocks and start booking it up the trail. The rest of the afternoon I wondered why they had all bailed at the same time, but social media would later reveal that a Billabong wetsuit shoot was going down with Megan Villa a few miles north of where we were. Pro surfing—a nice job if you can get it.

Georgia Fish – An Indonesian Sojourn. A Digital Short by Shane Fletcher

If we were to guess, we bet that the largest percentage of the surfing population would choose fun, glassy surf over wild, death-defying monster waves. We certainly would and that’s the exact reason why we enjoyed Georgia Fish’s clip so much. The scenery, the local smiles, the warm water and absolute playground quality of surf spots Georgia surfs makes us want to book the next trip to Sumbawa. The smooth, carving style of the Australian regular-foot and clean editing by Shane Fletcher combine to create quite a nice 4 minute diversion from work. Click play and enjoy.

Tammy-Lee Smith – Single Wave Thursday. One Ride, No Music, Just Surfing.

Six years ago this month I had the opportunity to meet one of South Africa’s best surfers, Tammy-Lee Smith, to this day one of the best barrel riders I’ve ever seen. It was so great getting to hear Tammy’s stories of life in Africa. Tammy’s deep love of her homeland and its people are things I’ll never forget about her. On this day in Newport Beach, she scored a bunch of clean semi-closeout barrels. This wave, however, had better shape and when she air dropped into it, I knew it would be a keeper.
