OCEANSIDE, California/USA (Sunday, August 4, 2013) – Malia Manuel (HAW), 19, has won the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Ford Supergirl Pro over fellow ASP WCT campaigner Paige Hareb (NZL), 23, in peaky three-to-five foot waves in Oceanside, California.Manuel led the Ford Supergirl Pro throughout the event’s entirety, owning the top scores of each round while progressing to the Final. The Hawaiian’s dominance would continue while securing the major victory, belting a 9.57 and 7.67 for powerful combinations on both her forhand and backhand to earn her first victory of the 2013 this season.

“The past couple of days, I really had motivation coming off of a tough result at the US Open,” Manuel said. “I wanted to do well there. It’s good to be in California, it’s like a second home to me. I wanted to get in rhythm and just finally have that push for a good result.”

Manuel, current No. 12 on the ASP WCT, had struggled to find consistency at the early season stops this year and hopes today’s major victory represents a turning point in her season.

“It felt good to finally have one event where everything came together,” Manuel said. “I’ve had such ups and downs this whole year and I was really confident, but it just never all flowed in one contest. I’m happy it happened here and I’m looking forward to finishing up the year.”

Paige Hareb, who finished runner-up at last year’s Ford Supergirl Pro, matched her efforts in Oceanside again this year. The talented Kiwi put in a polished performance throughout the entirety of the event, but was unable to find the scores needed to surpass Manuel in the Final.

“This is my best result of the year, so I’m pretty happy, but I wish I just could have performed a little bit better in the Final,” Hareb said. “It just didn’t go my way. It was pretty hard to find the right one and it was one of the hardest heats I’ve had in competition and Malia (Manuel) did well.”

Hareb, current No 12 on the Women’s WCT, was another elite competitor looking to potentially requalify for the ASP Top 17 via the Qualifying Series (QS) and her second place finish will help the goofy-footer gain traction towards attaining her goal for next season.

“I hadn’t had a good result on the QS yet this year and hopefully this will get me up there,” Hareb said. “Hopefully I’m going to move on to Europe and get some good results there and requalify.”

Pauline Ado (FRA), 22, marched through two rounds on the final day of competition besting fellow French surfer Justine Dupont, 21, en route to the final. Despite Ado’s success in the early rounds, she was unable to find a rhythm in her Semifinals clash against Manuel, finishing equal 3rd overall.

“I had a really good result in the US Open and getting a 3rd here is good for my QS ranking,” Ado said. “I’m super happy overall, but I wish I surfed better in the Semifinal. Malia (Manuel) was on every wave and I didn’t get anything, but it was a good leg for sure.”

Ado, current No. 10 on the ASP WCT, was relieved to earn another Semifinals finish following her Equal 3rd place result at the US Open of Surfing and hopes to carry her momentum in to the European leg of the season.

“The two last QS events are in Europe, so I’ll have my family and friends there and a lot of support,” Ado said. “Hopefully I can get a few more good results under my belt and requalify for next year’s WCT.”

Alessa Quizon (HAW), 19, who entered the Ford Supergirl Pro ranked No. 4 on the ASP Women’s World Ranking, earned her career-best result in Oceanside with an equal 3rd place finish. The Hawaiian goofy-footer would best fellow Oahu native Coco Ho, 22, in the Quarterfinals, but was unable to surpass Hareb in their Semifinals affair.

“I’m really happy that I made it this far,” Quizon said. “This is my first Semifinal in a 6-Star QS and I’ve improved so much from last year. I’ve had a few Quarterfinals results as well and I’m feeling confident going in to the rest of the year.”

OCEANSIDE, California/USA (Saturday, August 3, 2013) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Ford Supergirl Pro returned to building two-to-four foot (1 metre) waves at Oceanside Pier today, with several ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) surfers dominating their heats despite a shock elimination from current ASP World No. 1 Carissa Moore (HAW), 20.
Malia Manuel (HAW), 19, took out two heat wins today with a hard-fought effort despite the day’s tricky conditions while earning the event’s highest scores. The Hawaiian belted a single-wave score of 9.60, finishing with a combined effort of a 17.60 heat total in the final minutes of her Round of 24 campaign.

“This morning I came down early and had a practice surf and as the tide was filling in my first heat got really slow,” Manuel said. “I had to wait 15 minutes to get my second score and I just had to trust my instincts. This Round of 24 heat was fun, there were a lot more flurries of waves with lots of peaks and I like a little wind. I got some fun waves.”

Manuel, current ASP World No. 12, has lost some close heats throughout her 2013 ASP Women’s WCT season, and hopes a result a the Ford Supergirl Pro will mark a momentum swing for her year.

“I just want to get some heat wins and carry it in to the rest of the year,” Manuel said. “This beginning of the year was totally different from my rookie year. I had such a good start and made a few Quarterfinals, so it was a whole different mindset. This year, I had to reevaluate what was going on. I was confident in my boards and my surfing and it was a couple things that I had to twist with heats and I know anything can happen with one result.”

Pauline Ado (FRA), 22, fresh off of a 3rd place result at the US Open of Surfing, advanced through two heats today with impressive wave selection, punctuating her Round of 12 berth by defeating Carissa Moore in their Round of 24 affair.

“I didn’t surf that well this morning and came second, and I guess I had a harder heat this afternoon,” Ado said. “Carissa (Moore) just won the US Open and Dimity (Stoyle) won the last QS, so it was a pretty tough heat. I only got two fives, but it was enough to win. I was stressing out until the end.”

Silvana Lima, past ASP World Title threat, looked at home in the peaky beachbreak conditions, unloading fins-free turns and powerful combinations to solidify her position in the Round of 12.

“I’m so confident in these conditions and I have a new board that feels really good,” Lima said. “The waves are fun out there and I’m really happy to get through.”

Lima, current No. 14 on the ASP Women’s WCT, has struggled to find a rhythm among the ASP Top 17 this season following a severe knee injury but feels her performances are improving as the year progresses.

“This does a lot for my confidence,” Lima said. “When I got injured, I wasn’t able to surf at all for two years. It feels good to just surf now. My knee doesn’t hurt anymore and I feel 100 percent. I’m trying to get some good results on the QS and the WCT to requalify for next year.”

Paige Hareb (NZL), 23, last year’s Ford Supergirl Pro runner-up, would contribute to the day’s upsets, defeating defending event champion Sage Erickson (Ventura, CA), 22, in a rematch of last year’s Final while securing a spot in the Round of 12.

“Sage (Erickson) has beaten me a few times now and it was good to get one back on her,” Hareb said. “I’m the lone Kiwi, so it was nice to see an Aussie get through the heat with me as well. I feel good out here event though it’s a tricky wave. It seems to change everyday and every tide and I’m just trying to be on to it and have fun out there.”

The Ford Supergirl Pro will return tomorrow at 10am local time and crown a champion by day’s end. Watch the webcast LIVE via www.supergirlpro.com

Los Angeles, Calif. (July 9, 2012) – ASA Entertainment announced today that the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Ford Supergirl Pro presented by Paul Mitchell will take place for the second consecutive year at the Oceanside Pier in Oceanside, Calif. from August 2-4, 2013. Admission to the event is free.

The Ford Supergirl Pro will serve as the lone women’s ASP qualifying event scheduled in North America for the 2013 season and plays a critical role for surfers looking to solidify their position on the 2014 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour (WCT).

“With the Ford Supergirl Pro currently representing the only women’s qualifying event in America, this contest is extremely important in the girls’ qualification process for next year’s WCT,” Jessi Miley-Dyer, ASP Women’s Tour Manager said. “Since this event falls towards the end of the women’s qualifying season, results at the Ford Supergirl Pro could be make-or-break for girls on the qualifying bubble.”

In addition to being the only Women’s Star event in North America, the Ford Supergirl Pro will also be the largest female contest in the world with 100 of the world’s top female pros committed to compete. Some of the world-class surfers participating in the 2013 event include Bethany Hamilton (Lihue, HI), Carissa Moore (Honolulu, HI), Lakey Peterson (Santa Barbara, CA), Coco Ho (Oahu, HI), Laura Enever (Sydney, Australia), Malia Manuel (Kauai, HI), Paige Hareb (New Plymouth, NZ), Sofia Mulanovich (Lima, Peru), Sage Erickson (Malibu, CA) and Alana Blanchard (Kauai, HI).

“I am so excited about competing in the Ford Supergirl Pro,” said Pro Surfer Bethany Hamilton, the subject of the hit movie, Soul Surfer. “Women’s surfing is really exciting at the moment, and to be part of such an important event in the US for women’s surfing is awesome!”

Ford’s Fiesta has signed on as the title sponsor for the 2013 contest, as part of the “Fiesta Movement” – an innovative campaign that puts 100 social influencers in new 2014 Fiestas to help showcase the car’s unique personality and attributes.
“We’re very excited about the Ford Supergirl Pro competition,” said Keith Koeppen, Ford advertising and media manager. “To us, this is more than just a sponsorship; it’s a way for us to work together to support the sport.”

The event marks the sixth year of Supergirl’s support of women’s surfing. Prior to becoming a 6-Star event in 2012, the Supergirl Pro Junior was one of the world’s largest Pro Junior competitions. Several of today’s top WCT pros are former Supergirl Pro Junior finalists, including Courtney Conlogue, Coco Ho, Carissa Moore, Malia Manuel, Lakey Peterson and Sage Erickson.

“We are really excited about the expansion of the Ford Supergirl Pro in 2013 and the record-breaking field of women participating,” said Rick Bratman, CEO of ASA Entertainment, the event’s management company and one of the leading producers of action sports event and television programming in the US. “We have been supporting women’s surfing for many years, and with tremendous partners like Ford, Paul Mitchell, GoBank and Warner Bros. Consumer Products, we are expecting 2013 to be the best Supergirl event ever as well as a building block for future women’s events in the US.”

The Ford Supergirl Pro will be broadcast nationally on Fox Sports Net (FSN) Friday, October 18 at 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. There will be a live webcast from the event on Sunday, August 4, that will be shown on several surf industry web sites.

“The Supergirl Jam series is the living embodiment of female empowerment, bringing together an amazing group of female athletes across multiple sports,” said Karen McTier, executive vice president, Domestic Licensing and Worldwide Marketing, Warner Bros. Consumer Products. “The strength, style, and skill these athletes bring to the event is such an inspiration to young women everywhere and we’re thrilled to have the Supergirl S-Shield at the forefront once again.”

In addition to presenting the best female surfing on the planet, the event supports an eco-awareness platform that will feature more than 10 sustainability organizations as well as a surf industry village, live music, seminars, yoga, fashion, autographs from the pros, free hair styling by Paul Mitchell and other female-oriented activities.

The event will run on Friday, August 2 and Saturday, August 3, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, August 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Ford Supergirl Pro presented by Paul Mitchell is the second event of the 2013 Supergirl Jam Series, the action sports industry’s largest all-female competition and lifestyle series, featuring more than 150 female pros in surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding. Kyla Langen & the Fire Swell of 2007

These images were taken during the San Diego fires of October 2007. As dozens of firefighters raced down nearby streets, our family had packed away a small amount of treasures and documents for a quick escape from the flames which were two hillsides from our home. In the end, the winds shifted and smoke and ash rained down on us instead of burning embers. Sadly, hundreds of families in San Diego were not so lucky during this firestorm.

As often happens in life, there are two sides to every coin. In this case, the same fires that wrecked people’s lives resulted in atmospheric conditions that were a pleasure to shoot photos in. As the smoke subsided a bit I met up with Carlsbad’s Kyla Langen to shoot a couple of evening sessions in the ever-changing, trippy colors. The surf was marginal so we didn’t score a ton of surf photos but as is often the case, Kyla saved the day with a quick flip of her hair.
